Unversity of Montana track and field coach Tom Raunig announced Wednesday that Phillip Krok of North Rocks, New South Wales, Australia, recently signed a scholarship offer and will begin competing for the Grizzlies during the 2008 indoor and outdoor track and field seasons.
Krok, who competes in the sprints, recently finished his first year of studies at the APM Training Institute in North Sydney, Australia, where he studied business marketing. APM does not have an athletics program. He completed his high schooling in December 2006 when he graduated from the King's School in Parramatta, New South Wales.
Krok posted personal bests of 10.72 in the 100 meters, 21.90 in the 200 meters, 48.90 in the 400 meters and 14.31 in the 110-meter hurdles in 2006, his final year of competition at the King's School.
Montana's top times during the 2007 outdoor season were 10.80 in the 100 meters (James Brown), 21.71 in the 200 meters (Brown), 47.65 in the 400 meters (Cody Henning) and 14.50 in the 110-meter hurdles (Matt Larson). Larson's season-best time in the 110-meter hurdles won the 2007 Big Sky Conference championship.
"We are excited to add Phil to our team," Raunig said. "He will help our 400- and 1,600-meter relays and be a high-level athlete in the Big Sky Conference in his individual events. We believe his addition will move this year's relays into a position to surpass the long-standing school records in those events."
(Montana's outdoor 400-meter relay record of 40.44 was established in 1969 by Bill Zins, Bob Zins, Dick Koontz and Roy Robinson, while its 1,600-meter relay record of 3:11.64, which was set by Dale Giem, Ed Wells, Mike Andrews and Stan Kerr, was set in 1977. UM's 1,600-meter indoor record of 3:12.19 was set by Ted Ray, Craig Schlichting, Bart Bezanson and Everett Barham in 1984.)
Krok finished second in the 110-meter hurdles and fourth in the 400 meters at the 2006 New South Wales Greater Public Schools Carnival. He went on to place fourth in the 110-meter hurdles and fifth in the 100 meters at the 2006 New South Wales State Athletics Carnival.
As a sophomore in 2004, Krok was a member of the King's School's New South Wales Greater Public Schools Carnival 400-meter relay title-winning team that posted a still-standing record time of 44.04.
Krok has also competed in Australian rules football, rugby and cricket.
