Speaking of news, let's not jump the gun on Jakub quite yet. I have a feeling there will be more information down the road about him. We shall see come the beginning of basketball season, who will be with us this season, who will be gone, and who are future GRIZ? :thumb:

What exactly do you mean "jump the gun" and "more information"?

Why don't you just say what you know? These veiled references that posters make to knowing some secret info that they can't divulge are just weak.[/quote]

There's nothing veiled about it. Just saying more things can happen with an international recruit.
(1) Academic requirements, records etc can take longer to sort out.
(2) Distance from home and time to still change their mind
(3) Common for young Euros to hone their game an extra year, then come play ball in the states.
(4) People have short memories, just a few years ago we landed a solid foreign player, but lost him to something getting messed up with his academic credits, transfers, or something academic related.
(5) Travis wants to balance out the scholarship distribution for the next few years. It really would make sense to wait a year on this kid. It would benefit him as well as the GRIZ regarding the balancing of scholarships.

Giving his verbal to the GRIZ does not mean he will necessarily be playing this year. There are a number of options we have to wait to see play out. Just saying, until the GRIZ release the plans for any Euro player, it is best to wait to hear what the plans are. Way too many X factors involved with an Euro player to get excited this early in the process. :thumb:

Also to note and keep in mind, sometimes when someone does get information, the source does not want the specifics known, so the best one can do is give general information and drop hints. Some people actually want to keep their sources. Does it hurt for others to do some legwork if they really want to know the specifics so badly? There is nothing in stone on EGRIZ saying any one person has to reveal the specifics, if and when they know the specifics. Hell, I know there a few egrizzers who have stopped posting information all together because either way some egrizzers bitch about things. Some egrizzers just don't appreciate or respect the information that is given.

Think about this.
(1) Poster reveals everything he/she knows- there are those who go on the "who's your source" tirade, or "Don't be posting this stuff until we get "official" word. Or insinuations of the poster being uninformed, or lying.

(2) There are those who nitpick the information or make it their mission to find anything slightly different or off from the original piece of information. Example: Player X is going to be out with an injury X amount of time. Player X then returns sooner, or later, or not at all. That leads to the invariable "You were wrong. Don't be posting what you don't know."

(3) Post general information or hint things out of respect to your sources or you don't know enough. Then comes the "Tell us more", or "You don't know crap, why post it?"

(4) Don't post much of anything, then the enviable "Who knows what about this?"

Based on my personal experience and knowing others who used to post good information here, maybe we all should get an idea of which posters have or do provide consistently good information and appreciate whatever information one chooses to give. It really is amazing how much information we are missing out on, because the posters who used to provide it, no longer feel it is worth the consequences of revealing it here. Long time egrizzers know who those posters are, or were (those who stopped posting all together because of a few idiots here). I know I have stopped posting as specific information as I used to. Maybe it is best to just have the public wait for the "official" word from the teams/school.

There is one egrizzer who has a relative who is very close to the athletic departments that is given very good and accurate information. That poster used to give much more information than he does now. Why? Could it be because he too "had it" with the few idiots and jerks here? All I know is, when that poster does post any specifics, I appreciate it and do take it to the bank the few times he does drop information. That is very infrequent these days though.

For some exceptionally endowed women and many extraordinary athletes, you can probably say, anatomy is destiny. But for the rest of us--and for many athletes as well--character is destiny. Today's basketball prospects are judged like prize dogs at the Westminster Kennel Club Show, their statistics refined down to the last turnover on a three-on-two break, and their highlight videos shown worldwide. But the issue of character only reveals itself under fire and over time. There are hundreds of ballers out there with more raw talent than a Krystkowiak or a Jordan Gregroy, but few with their grit, desire to succeed and will to jump right up once knocked down. Young Jakub Niziol clearly has game. He reminds me a bit of Mario Hezonja, Orlando's super rookie who lit up the summer league with his highlight dunks, and who many now think is the leading candidate for rookie of the year. But does he have Hezonja's brash confidence, the drive to get better? We'll see.

But one thing is clear to me now: Travis DeCuire has character. And his character is reverberating though our basketball program like the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. The first sign to me was his willingness to hire a former head coach as his top assistant. Great hires can take your company or your program on a magic carpet ride, but it takes a great man to know that and to act on that, and not be fearful that you'll be overshadowed or diminished. DeCuire aced that test. Another sign was my visit with Ahmaad Rorie's mom at the USF game. Recruiting can be a deceitful, shameful process as it's practised by many of the major programs, but it's tough to fool a mother, especially where her son is involved. And it was clear to me that DeCuire had aced the "Rorie's Mom" test as well. Finally, I love DeCuire's courtside manner. I'm not a big fan of screaming loonies as coaches. It's an absolute given that college kids and college refs are going to make mistakes, but the answer is not some hyper-shrill, tantrum-throwing hissyfit on the sideline, demeaning a young man before an arena full of fans. Yes, there are emotions, and yes, there are times I'd like to kill a ref too. But giving in to those emotions is childlike, the opposite of emotional maturity. Don't know where DeCuire learned that lesson, but he obviously has, and I respect him greatly for it.

I love both where this program has been and is headed under DeCuire's leadership, from the hiring of Ken Bone, to the new policy on redshirting, to the evident high-character of our recent recruits, to the wide recruiting net that seems to be in place--especially the willingness to go after high-profile players. I even think the major complaint on this board--that we're not going after the 6'8" glass-cleaners--is self-correcting, as some of these 6'7" wing kids will grow as they mature, while retaining their innate athletic abilities. Let's enjoy the ride, because with DeCuire here, it's going to be a great one.

Citay, I agree completely with your comments.

Does anyone know when the summer "scrimmages" take place. I'd like to time a trip to Missoula with the opportunity to swing by the Adams Center and see the new kids. I understand that everyone is supposed to be on campus for the second half of summer school. Is this an afternoon or evening thing?

Mid July on most the team will be in Missoula. Open gyms are usually mid evenings in the WAG. Normally the open gyms are pretty damn competitive too. It is a great time to see who has done what in the off season, and what the newbies bring.

I appreciate the response (it was very thorough and I agree with most of it), but It was MTTarheel and his mysterious assertion that "more information" would be forthcoming on this Polish kid that I was addressing, not you. Lol

What I meant by more information is, at this stage it is too early to know if he will be here this year or next year? If he is here this year, I would guess a redshirt year would be in order. There are so many more x factors with International players. I would not be surprised if he plays this year in Europe, then joins us next season. He and the coaches have a lot to weigh as to how they want to handle his eligibility. To me, I feel he it makes more sense to have him develop another year in Europe, then join us in 2016.

My post was not directed at either of you. I am tired of seeing egrizzers with solid history of giving pretty good information be scrutinized, criticized, etc here by a small minority of egrizzers. Anymore it is a "damn if you do and damn if you don't" situation, in regards to what someone should post, and what information to post. Sometimes, I wonder if it is worth the efforts and time. By the way, I don't like the new changes on the quotes feature. After 4 or 5 posts, it does not separate the quotes. :thumb:

That is part of my thinking why Jakub might not be with the GRIZ until 2016. :thumb:
Except, assuming Edmonds is gone, they are not over committed/signed unless Dejong has been awarded a scholarship. :thumb:

I think a lot is still up in the air when Jakub is with the team, and how he fits in best for long term plans. I am surprised the U of M has of yet made his signing official. Maybe they want to see how well the returnees did in the off season to determine when to bring Jakub aboard. I know Gfeller, Breunig, Bradshaw, Boehning, and Dunn (despite being in a cast all summer) have all been busting ass in the off season. It is common for Euros to improve their skills in Europe an additional year before playing Div 1 ball in the states. I hope to take in some open gyms when I am in Missoula more often again.

 Wow ! We have a policy on redshirting, and the Mormon Tabernacle Choir is reverberating through the UM basketball program. I learned two new things today. :o

Curious, is there somewhere that posts the new policy on redshirting?

per a couple of twitter posts shown on verbalcommits.com, Jakub is going the JC route (Howard College).......presumably, the plan to go to the Griz did not work out.

This does not surprise me one bit. I heard a few things to not expect him this year, and not to jump the gun with him being a GRIZ this year. We shall see if he is a GRIZ next year or not.
