Griz 2010 - 11 basketball schedule

So you are such a big time fan (1996) that unless the Griz schedule to meet your needs you are gonna bail? I have had season tickets since the 70's and pay for them even though I live out of state. I give them away. I thought you were a diehard, guess I need to change your status to fairweather fan. :o

When they schedule 23% of the games at times when people can't attend do you expect people to want to pay for those? Not many people like paying for things they can't use, or events they can't attend. It makes more sense if you can't attend that many games to just buy single tickets for the events you can attend instead.

While I didn't attend the Griz games back in the 70s (since I wasn't born yet) since the Mid 90s I can't remember the last Griz BB game that I missed.. I've been a huge griz BB fan ever since I was a kid, attending the games since back when Tinkle was playing for the Griz.

I went to several of the Griz BB camps, including those when Tinkle was involved in them, fine tuning my free throws and ball handling with instructions from Leroy Washington (who was a great teacher) and watching Keith Crawford put on a show dunking for us all during the camp.

I'm one of the few Griz fans who, if forced to choose one, would choose attending the Basketball games over the Football games. I am even thinking about just buying single game tickets for the games I can attend this year, since 3 of the games I'll most likely not be able to attend due to having a normal 8-5 job. You want to label me a fairweather fan too along with GrizWhiz and others who are pissed off by the idiotic scheduling that's been presented to us?

I am obviously pretty pissed about the fact that they scheduled 3 games during the work week in the afternoon. It really seems to me that the U of M pays little or no attention to the basketball program, and doesn't mind screwing over their fans. They've done it in the past, and now they are doing it this year with those 3 games. Hell...look at the roster...they don't even keep the bios updated on there for the players. We have bios on some players from the 2008-2009 season still up.

Can you imagine the outrage if a home game against Weber State, or NAU was scheduled for the middle of the afternoon on a Wednesday for Football? Not only would have of the people who attend collectively shit bricks, the other half would probably riot and start burning people at the stake. Why won't they at least try to pretend that they care about basketball 10% as much as they care about football?

I was talking to a friend and co worker about this situation the other day...and he brought up a very good point. If they continue to screw over the fans eventually they'll start chasing people away completely and they fans will find something else to do. Last year it was the Utah Valley State game... no big deal right? It was just 1 game... well shit..that's hard earned money spent that basically was shit on by the university because they didn't reschedule the game or feel the need to make things right with the fans. Would that happen with Football? They basically said "fuck you" to the fans. Now it's the 3 games scheduled while the majority of people are at work?

To make matters worse if you do send them an email about it you get a copy and paste bullshit response that makes a very pathetic attempt at explaining why they did this. They might as well set up an auto responder that just says "Quit your bitchin and give us your money...it's only basketball so who gives a fuck?"

Lets look at the reasons given in their cut & paste response (which they sent to me, and a couple other people I know who complained).

So there was a volley ball game that conflicted with one of the BB games... WTF? I'm sorry..but Volley Ball? Are you fucking kidding me? They couldn't either reschedule the basketball game (which is against Montana Tech) or reschedule the volley ball game?! The attendance is already going to be bad for a game against Montana Tech.... and no I'm not complaining about the team they are playing... I like seeing a lot of the new players get quality minutes during those games. But now it's at 3pm on a work day? How many people do you think will be able to attend that game?

Then there's the next game...the Lady Griz have a tournament game. Ok...it's a tournament that the University has control over..so why not do something like....oh...try to schedule it at a time when it doesn't have conflicts? Or maybe..try to schedule the Men Griz game so it doesn't conflict with the tourney? Are they really trying to say that they had no other option but to schedule it during the middle of the afternoon on a Wednesday at 1pm? This is a conference game too, while the students are gone for Christmas vacation. What do you think the attendance is going to be like for this game?

Oh..and then there's the new years eve day game against Weber State... Because as we know the entire business world as we know it shuts down on new years eve day.... Oh wait...it doesn't... many people get new years day off, not new years eve day. So they schedule one of the most anticipated home games of the season (against Weber State) at 1pm on a Friday. And then they try to say it'll have better attendance than if they scheduled it in the evening? ..... I'm just at a loss.... So...we'll have better attendance for a game scheduled at a time when most people are at work, on a date when the students are all enjoying hams, turkeys and shit at home with family for Christmas vacation, than we would if it was an evening game when people who have 8-5 jobs could actually attend? :-?

You know... I'm not as pissed off about the fact that I (and people I know) can't attend as I am about the fact that these games are going to have incredibly shitty attendance. Our basketball team deserves better than this cluster-fuck scheduling job that has been done. The University tries to claim that they are doing things to try to improve interest in the basketball program, then they turn around (again) and screw over the same fans that they are trying to keep interested, and ensure that many fans who might have been interested can't attend a couple of the important conference home games (including one against Weber).

The Griz Basketball team deserves better than this... and this long rant isn't directed at you Grizbacker, I'm just pissed that the U of M seems to not give a rats ass about the Basketball team anymore. I remember seeing interest in basketball pretty much die out to the point where the Missoulian would even miss mentioning that there was a game occasionally... :x I'd love nothing more than to see interest restored in the basketball team, and attendance to get back to the way it was years ago. Scheduling fans out of being able to attend is not the best way to get people interested in it again.

Screw over fans that have been loyal to the Griz for many many years, and make sure that no one with a day job can attend important games?

Although I am not much of a basketball fan (not just UM, but basketball in general), I think your post is spot on. The UM basketball program appears to be treated like the red-headed stepchild -- and that should NOT be happening. You do have to wonder what is going on....

Maybe they just do not give a crap for the mens basketball program. There is all kinds of info on this years Lady Griz basketball team already. Now they are doing profiles for each player each day. Schedule for Lady Griz was updated for this year a long time ago. Mens basketball schedule was added just recently and those last two games were added with no fan fare.

...don't tell the dick heads on the football forum...
...the griz are bringing in lewy and clark for the opener...
...if they get wind we're playing a patsy..the hoop forum will explode...

... 8-) ...

Anyone know if there is a title IX issue here? My concern would be: ladies have more budget per player since so much money goes into football for men. I really have no idea and I don't have time to research the subject.

I doubt it. Maybe it's because one of the Lady Griz coaches has a masters degree in computer science, she may be more on the ball on making sure the Lady Griz info is correct on the Griz website. Lady Griz budget is smaller then the mens basketball team and with two more players for womens basketball team (15 scholarships versus 13 for men), the budget per player is most likely smaller than the mens.

a good post from a real Griz fan...since I live so far away, I make it a point to go to Griz BBall games within 100 miles...UCLA. Loyola, Sta Barb, Riverside, etc...I actually think the attendance new year's eve will be better in the afternoon than at night, but will there be anyone there at all? It doesn't seem right to play a game like that with students gone, weather bad, kids should be home with their families and friends...and, YES, IF THIS WERE THE FOOTBALL TEAM all hell would break loose...AND, IF THE U MOVES UP, GAMES LIKE THIS IN FOOTBALL MIGHT JUST BE NORMAL....as it is, playoffs and tourney games are on week days....as well as week ends...

I am not calling you out on this, but I am curious why you would do this? I am assuming (which might make me a fool from the beginning) that your seats are premium GSA seats?

in my opinion, one of the biggest issues with Griz BB games is there is hardly any atmosphere at the games, and the atmosphere is at its worst in the premium seats, where there is usually nobody sitting there, or if the seats are being used it is by people more interested in their cell phone than the game.

The Griz have tried to counter this opening up any unused seats part way through the game, which helps to get some people who actually want to watch the game and cheer down closer to the floor, but then it just pisses off the people who actually paid for their seats.

It does make me wonder if the University encouraged people who don't use their seats on a regular basis, including corporate sponsors, to donate the equivalent to the round ball club instead of buying tickets (perhaps holding back tickets for Griz-Cat or whatever couple of games the donor wanted to attend) if everyone wouldn't be better off? If enough people donated ticket value to the roundball club instead of buying (unused) season tickets maybe we could get the students back on the sidelines, and maybe get a little more atmosphere and excitement going (of course a better home schedule would help as well).

Just a thought.

a few rambling observations...

I love the fact that some of you are fired up over basketball scheduling. I wish NAU hoops had similar support. Good to see some passion for Big Sky Conference basketball from a school not called Weber State (no digs at them either as they have a good thing going too).

Just a guess here but the reasoning for scheduling day games is a LOT of people either take that week off or just don't have to work (teachers) between Christmas and New Years. Prime-time for vacation takers and family gatherings. Maybe the U of M decided that everyone in football-crazy Montana would stay at home and watch bowl games that night instead of going out in the cold for a hoops game? I don't know?

College basketball's second fiddle in your state. Football has been king s**t since the 15 year run began. I tried to talk up Griz and Bobcat mens and women's hoops when I lived in Montana and was met with vacant stares about 95% of the time. For a state that supports high school basketball well, I find it confusing why so few seem to care about college hoops. Football is a cash cow. Basketball isn't. Sadly, that's my guess at to the priority difference between football and basketball. That and the party atmosphere that is Griz football Saturdays doesn't work with the manner in which the sport of basketball is played (i.e. game played indoors, no drinking on premises for NCAA sponsored events, tailgating not a factor).

Re: your home mens hoops home schedule being less than inspiring....show me a Big Sky Conference team that consistently pulls in top-notch upper-level competition @ home. A good game here and there perhaps? At least the U of M convinced a Pac-10, Oregon State, team to play you in Missoula. U of A plays NAU every year but NEVER in Flagstaff. ASU won't even schedule NAU after losing in 2006 to the Jacks in Tempe. Wankers!! Unless you're the North Carolina, Duke, or Kentuckys of the world this is just how the sport it is.

Montana gets Oregon State at home?

Why cant Weber get teams to come play at the DEE?

We have tried to get Nevada, Boise St, Idaho, Wyoming, UNLV, San Diego State, Colorado State and Air Force to do home and homes with us but not one of them want to, so we are stuck playing at home vs the University of the Southwest??? Dont seem to have any problems getting road games though.

purple makes everyone look fat...

And now Utah has stated that they will stop coming to the Dee after 2011 which is the last game in the contract.
