Griz 2010 - 11 basketball schedule

Here is this coming season's basketball schedule. Many of the teams on this schedule have already been mentioned on the schedule in another thread. Griz will be playing in a bracket buster game this year. Will be playing Idaho and Cal State Fullerton twice. UCLA, Portland, Buffalo, and Nevada are the only division I teams Griz play in non-conference that had a better than .500 record last season. I expect UCLA and Nevada to be the best two teams. Portland may be the best non-conference team Griz play at home.
Griz play in no holiday tournaments this year. Guess the holiday tournament UM hosted last year wasn't sucessful enough to do it again. Maybe not enough attendance?

Conference season doesn't start at the beginning of december like last year. That is good.

Travel pairs have been modified. Griz now have to travel between Greely, Co to Sac State. Another bus trip involved.

Griz vs Bobcats scheduled back to back weekends.

27 game schedule, although I am thinking the Lewis-Clark State game is an exhibition game which wouldn't count. Then it would be a 26 game schedule and there is room to add one or two more games to the schedule.

They'll certainly be tested early, with road games at Nevada and Utah before their sneakers are broken in.

But I agree the home non-conf schedule isn't going to create much enthusiasm.

Updated:

Includes Oregon St @ home.

you guys have a good lookin OOC schedule. I am very jealous. Our OOC not so great. We both play at Utah early on though. I think those could be some nice road wins.

I especially am hoping for a WSU win in SLC. We gotta get one this year, it is rare that Utah isn't good. They lost 7 players last yr so I do not know what to expect from the Utes. Only 2 graduated. I assume no one likes the coach.

We beat Utah last yr at the Dee but it was our first Ute win since 2001. ISU beat them the year before in Poca...somehow.

A 1pm start for the Dec 29th and 31st conf openers seems strange!
Lady griz have a game at 7pm on 29th. Could be a lot of people with new years parties to go to on the 31st, so 1pm doesn't seem so odd that day.

I like the 1 pm game. I will come down watch the Griz beat Weber and then attend 1st Night Missoula, which was excellent last year.

1pm game times absolutely SUCK for those of us that have to work! Why not Ladies first? They could play just as easily play at 1pm as the men can! Actually it is ridiculous that anyone has to play at 1pm!

The lady griz game is the second game of the lady griz holiday tournament. Some people could watch three games that day. Remember, both men's and women's basketball teams have been pretty close in attendance the past few years. Lady griz had better attendance two years ago. So lady griz shouldn't always be starting it out all the time.

Just wanted to be sure I'm reading this right...

11/19/2010........Montana Tech......................3 pm - Friday?!
12/29/2010........Northern Arizona...................1 pm - Wednesday?!
12/31/2010........Weber State........................1 pm - Friday?!

Are they really having 3 of the home games during the week as afternoon games or is my calendar all messed up? Ok I've checked 2 different calendars now..and it does look like these are during the week and in the afternoon.

Holy shit.... and we thought the Sunday afternoon games had bad attendance... That really does suck for people who have 8-5 jobs... 23% of the home schedule (not counting the exhibition game) we wont be able to attend, and that includes one of the better matchups in the Big Sky (Griz vs Weber).

Three weekday day games simply means my two season tickets (that go back to 1996) will not be renewed. I can't believe they are doing this. This schedule may work for most people, but it sure does not work for me. I am pretty disappointed. :o

I sent an email to the athletic department to ask them if this was a mistake, or if this was really the schedule.

The response I got states that they scheduled the Montana Tech game for a weekday during the day so it didn't conflict with a Vollyball game. The game against NAU was moved to 1pm on a Wednesday so it doesn't conflict with a Lady Griz game. The game against Weber was moved to 1pm on Friday (new years eve) to "bring in a better crowd than a 7 p.m. tip on New Year’s Eve would have."

So one moved for Volleyball, one moved for the Lady Griz, and one moved to somehow get better attendance at 1pm on a weekday than it would at 7pm because it's New Year's Eve? The majority of people working do not get New Years Eve day off, so how is that going to increase attendance moving it to when people are working? I'm not sure I understand the other two reasons either... Wasn't there any way to reschedule these so that they didn't conflict, but still could have been played at a time where people would actually be able to attend?

I don't think that it's sunk in yet with a lot of the fans who buy season tickets.. Many probably haven't seen the schedule yet or noticed the times. There are going to be a lot of unhappy fans that can't make it to 23% of the Griz home schedule because of these changes... How many are going to want to pay for season tickets, but not be able to attend a good chunk of the games?

Poor choices by the athletic dept. which I believe will shrink an already small men's season ticket holder #. I don't believe they have ever done this before. Why now? :x

I'd recommend people email the athletic department about this at [email protected] or by using their contact form here:

I'm completely shocked that they would do something like this. It really seems sometimes like the University really doesn't give a rats ass about the basketball fans... You screw over the fans enough and they'll just stop going to the games and find something else to do :(

The Griz had a great year last year and that could really renew interest in the Men's basketball program. Instead we get crap like this which is going to drive attendance down for a couple of the big conference games?

After looking again at the reasons, it really doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me.

First off.... VolleyBall? They couldn't reschedule a VolleyBall game? Since when does VolleyBall draw more fans than a basketball game? Not only that, the Men's BB game that night is against Montana Tech... couldn't they have rescheduled it for another night with Montana Tech? Is Montana Tech really so hard to reschedule with?

Then we have the one during the Lady Griz tournament. They have complete control over that tournament....it's not like it's a Women's conference game. Why not have the tournament on the 27th and 28th instead? There are a number of things that could have been done different with that one..

Then we have the one on New Years Eve day... They actually think attendance will be MORE for a 1pm game on a work day like that than it would've been at 7pm because it's new years eve day? How many people actually get new years eve day off? We'll already have shitty attendance for that due to the students being out of school...and then they go and prevent the majority of people who have day jobs from attending? Yeah, the atmosphere for that Weber game sure will be electric!

Their reasons really don't seem to be very well thought out in my opinion. Very frustrating.... I honestly can't remember the last time I missed a Griz basketball game.

What would really help scheduling would be for the Big Sky conference to dump the conference tournament format they have, and go back to all three days at same location. also, dump the bracket buster game. Then they would be able to start the conference season after new years day.
I suspect the Lady Griz game in their holiday tournament was scheduled before the Griz games were scheduled. But, just like last year when Griz played N. Colorado and NAU around the first week of december, Big Sky Conference could have scheduled those two conference games earlier in december. Too late to change it earlier now though. Certainly they knew Lady Griz normally had their holiday tournament scheduled when they did and should have tried to get the Mens games scheduled on different days.

New years eve, no matter what time it is, is a bad day. Who is working new years day? Schedule the Griz game on new years day. Who cares about bowl games anyway. Schedule the games on 12/30/2010 and 01/01/2011.

that montana tech game could have been scheduled on saturday at 7 pm. Go to Griz-Cat game and then watch the basketball game. certainly wouldn't be the first basketball game scheduled after the Griz-Cat game.

Anyway, Griz and Lady Griz better hope the skiing is bad this year. I am likely going to miss some Lady Griz games due to all the 2pm games they have scheduled. But those two griz games could be a problem if there is a big snow day at Snowbowl.

Regarding the 3 day games, it does seem silly. But, teh first is against Montana Tech, probably get more people from Butte than Missoula anyways, we shouldn't be allowed to get upset about the starting time against an NAIA team. The NAU game time sucks and there is really no excuse for that. Regarding 12/31 since that is Friday most people will have that day off (that work M-F, anyways) since the holiday is usually given on Friday if if falls on Saturday, so I doubt you will see much impact there. Really any game over the holidays is a throw away for attendance anyways. Can't wait till we add SUU to the conference scheduling cue, that will really make it fun.

Sad to see the once well attended Griz BB games being bounced around (scheduling wise) like some club sport.

It appears that the schedule has been completed and schedule has been updated.

A home game against Great Falls on 12/09/2009 at 7pm. Yippee, two NAIA teams not counting the exhibition game against Lewis&Clark (I am assuming that is an exhibition game).

another road game against San Francisco on 12/12/2009. San Francisco had a 12 - 18 record last year.

These two additional games just magnifies the weakness of the home schedule and the strength of the road schedule. Nice to see some really good teams but they need to strengthen the home schedule to attract more fans.

So you are such a big time fan (1996) that unless the Griz schedule to meet your needs you are gonna bail? I have had season tickets since the 70's and pay for them even though I live out of state. I give them away. I thought you were a diehard, guess I need to change your status to fairweather fan. :o
