Griz 2006-07 Schedule

Spanky said:
Chi-Town....look at the overall schedule which is weak. You probably don't know, but we must play more ranked teams and beat them to be considered a national caliber, hopefully, ranked team. And I don't mean a Mid- Major ranking, but a ranking with the big boys. Head to head competition is the way it is done and a win over MSU Northern or Rocky Mountain doesn't cut it. Got it?

I get it. So.... should we be playing NC, Duke, maybe Texas? Would that make us national caliber? A ranked team has nothing to gain by playing us. Got it? Be happy with West Virginia they are by far the best team we have played in forever.

Why not play NC, Duke and Texas? They would probably enjoy playing Montana. All three probably wouldn't play us, but I would think that one of the three would.

Sorry Spank-man aside from "probably enjoying playing Montana" those teams gain nothing from playing us. Just steping into the ring with the Griz lowers their RPI, and if they should lose....

Chi-Town....I don't agree. ACC teams frequently play lower conference teams during the course of the year. It is a matter of building a professional relationship with them to schedule. We have a weak schedule, however, I will be supporting the Griz as always. One additional point, as you know, revenue at all games..basketball and football is key, therefore, playing teams that will draw fans is very important to the university from a financial point of view....more important than beating teams by 50 points.

Unbelievable, the program is leaps and bounds ahead of anywhere anyone would have imagined a few years ago, yet you are complaining about the schedule. As for the schedule, Spanky I respect your opinion, and I too would like to see better teams on it. My God it is not as easy as you make it sound. The best way to help make this all possible is by everyone getting their butts in the seats and having faith in the players, coaching staff and athetic department. Yes in time it can come, but there is so much we as fans do not know behind the scenes. Hell, Gonzaga has worked over a decade to be where they are at now. Meanwhile we are in year 3. That is a big difference. Another difference maker is the atmosphere for home games with factors such as sellout crowds (not just when MSU or a big boy is in town). The atmosphere is improving each game and the U is working hard at it. Fact is the students need to be more accomodated for that atmosphere. The elite programs, including Gonzaga have their fans constantly standing, making noise, etc. Example have the atmosphere of a Griz football game, by the way the funnest gameday in all the nation I feel. Myself, I want to be constantly standing, yelling, cheering etc at basketball games, but when a group gets into it there is always the few that say "sit down we cannot see the game." (ARGH, go get your asses up in the boonies, if you cannot or will not cheer the team on!) I understand having to cater to boosters as well. Honestly to God, how often do you see 1/2 those prime seats empty? Way too often. The griz had a great idea in the 8 minute dash, yet that was put to an end because of boosters complaining, many of which would not show up for games. We as fans need to either get our butts their and be loud or give the courtside seats back to the students who have the energy to cheer and be loud. To me as a fan, that is what college basketball is all about. Ask any player, guy or girl, fan interaction makes a world of difference. By the way, Spanky, "How many games have you been to the last 2 years?" When you are there do just sit there or do you encourage and cheer these guys on? Have you taken the time to personally get to know the players, coaching staff, or Jim O'day? If not, you should. Just maybe you will learn they too want what you want, but unfortunately it is not as easy as you think. Unfortunately for them they are in the spotlight. How would you feel if Tinkle or O'day would start nit picking you at your job, which they nothing about? Myself, I am proud of this program and where it is going. I also am happy to know the coaches, players, and everyone behind the scenes. It is also nice to know we finally have an AD that wants all programs to succeed and puts basketball on the same level as football. Since O'day taking over we are getting coaches that bleed Grizzly Blood, which in turn gets players that now give it their all as well. A few years back the players had lousy attitudes and were me players that would not bust their butts. Now, we have players that bust their butts and play together. As for the schedule, give this time. If by year 5 we still are not playing better teams, then you have more right to bitch. Only if your butt is at every game cheering them on. If not, you have no right to complain. Have some faith would you and appreciate what we have in mens basketball now. GO GRIZ!

Thank you, sorry for the long rant, if could have gone on much longer. The program has earned my respect and I think very highly of the players, coaches and staff in place now.

Mtgrizrule....If you have read many of Spanky's posts, you will realize that I am a strong supporter of our coaches, especially, football and our AD. I am a believer that we must play a higher level of competition, not only to improve our teams play, but to attract outstanding student athletes. The recently announced basketball schedule doesn't accomplish much toward that end and most fair minded individuals would agree, rather than attacking an individual who is expressing his opinion. Should I say great schedule when it isn't? Isn't it better to express the truth in the hope that those responsible will do an improved job of scheduling in the future?

What Spanky doesn't realize is that UM can play stiffer competition that will get it national recognition without getting stomped by Texas or Duke.

The Old Spice Classic is a good start. The Griz will play WVU and two other nationally recognized programs. Also Wyoming, BSU, WKU, and Oral--programs from stronger conferences. These are games the Griz can win while getting some national respect in the process.

It doesn't make a whole lot of sense to play a handful of games against the nations very best on their home floor, where the Griz would likely be embarrassed.

Playing and beating national caliber programs in tournaments on neutral floors is the way the Griz are going to gain a national rep, not by getting thrashed by Texas in Austin.

Understandable and I respect that. I think most of Griz nation want that too, including myself. My point is, until those seats are filled every game, regardless of opponent it is more difficult to do from a financial standpoint, especially now with travel costs being so high for everyone. Also it is not as easy as you think it is. The program deserves sellout crowds every game. They have proven they put a quality product on the floor every night. There are no selfish attitudes, they bust their butts and they play for one another. They have done their part, now it is time for Griz Nation as a whole to do our part by being in those seats, and bare with lesser opponents for a year or two. If we do that I am sure the tougher schedule will happen, being they will have the funds to travel or pay bigger programs to come here. If we sellout every game and the schedule gets no better then we can complain. The best crowds possible make a difference to those players and coaches. Sometimes a team maybe struggling, the team has done all they can yet no results. This is where fan encouragement helps. Two years ago, I remember Matt Martin taking a sideline charge, cannot remember the opponent. He and the whole team were fired up. Matt gets up from the charge pumping his fists, jumping up and down, then he and the bench turn to the crowd to get them up too. Well guess what there were very few courtside fans to get pumped up. Wish I had a picture of Matt's reaction after looking out to a baren crowd. He went from being all excited to being instantly deflated being there was nobody there to cheer them on. A play like that gives a team something extra, it gives them alot more extra when the fans are there. Are we on the same page now? I hope so.

Montana coaches always pad the schedule with cupcakes. Maybe the one year contract has something to do with it?

Stew Morrill still does it at Utah State.

MSU-Northern, MT Tech?? Suddenly they entered the 6 foot and under league for a couple of games. They might as well play a crew from the anex. They could be aplty named the Forester Ballers.

Who scheduled games on both sides of X-mas in Portland? I'm dreamin' of a cold, wet x-mas. I hope the guys get to go home for the holidays.

Where are the Pac 10 teams? Go on the road or get 2 for ones home and away. You have to schedule games where you plan to recruit!!! Da... :naughty: :naughty: It would be Washington with our guys. Yet no Nothwest teams. Let's get the Wazoo cougars for next year.

The schedule is weak and will do little for our program, especially, when there has been so much talk about our desire to become a factor on a national basis.

Aside from three NAIA chumps, the schedule is just fine.

Yeah, one would think that after going to the NCAA's the last two years that some kind of kindred competition would follow. It wouldn't be so bad if we were playing last years NAIA NC but...

Then again, MSU has College of Great Falls; even though they are ballyhooing a PAC-10 team visiting in the first time in like some twenty years.

Two observations I can make:

1. West Virginia will be a great game and due to graduation we will not be Pittsnoggled.

2. I would refuse the gift basket at the Old Spice tourney. You can buy that crap for five bucks at Wal-Mart. Now if they throw a little skin bracer and Brut, you are good to go.

The Griz play UC Riverside 09 December 2006; maybe in the future there will more games with the Big West Conference with UC Davis becoming a member officially 01 July 2007 in 17 conference-sponsored sports.

The teams in the Big West Conference, for basketball (M & W) at least:
Long Beach State
Pacific
CS Northridge
UC Riverside
Santa Barbara
CS Fullerton
UC Irvine
Cal Poly &
UC Davis eventually.

I'd much rather be playing these teams in pre-season than a much of NAIA teams.

Firstly Missoula is arguably THE most difficult place in D-1 to get to easily in December and January. It is IMPOSSIBLE to get any D-1 team to come here without a home-and-home PERIOD! Likewise it is very expensive and detrimental to the program to go play in far-flung places-Ask Pat Kennedy. We got into one high-profile tourney as we should every year. But we can't afford too many. Add into the fact that Tinkle got thrown into this year after most games were scheduled, there is little room to complain. Tinkle has time to work on future schedules and should upgrade the caliber should our team continue to look like we are a quality team capable of taking on upper-levels of play.

A lot of people are dissing some teams on our schedule that aren't as big of push-overs as they probably think. Who really knows how good a team will be this year anyways? Riverside might go 10-1 to start the year. Who knows?

You could throw 5 rocks from the perimeters of UC-Riverside and hit 5 talented b-ballers. I don't see why or how they are not capable of becoming a good program in no time. We SHOULD we playing Big West and West Coast Conference teams. Exposure to LA-area is great. Local recruits can come check out a Griz game or at least have a local program to compare us with. "Hey we're a lot better than UC-Riverside. We're legit D-1 up here". Smart type of game to play. Riverside also plays #5 UCLA right before us, so their (35) fans are probably dissing having us on their schedule too.

Utah Valley State (16-13 last year) beat or played well against all Big Sky opponants they played last year going 4-3 beating both Weber (by 19) and Sac State. They are a solid program on the rise that nobody respects (yet).

South Dakota State-who knows? They have upped their programs recently. They are going into the Mid- Continent starting in 2007-08. Also Matt Martin being a South Dakotan, it is kind of a reward for him to show what the locals missed out on.

Western Kentucky ,Wyoming, Oral Roberts, Portland and Boise are all solid programs, on an even par or slightly above us.

There's basically MSU-Northern and Tech as the only 2 questionable games. It's either get them to come here or spend a lot of $ and go play somewhere else? We don't have the funding a
major program has, that's why we don't go play them.
