I am pretty sure he had a shoulder injury last year and treated it conservatively. May not have done what he wanted it to do and needed to get it fixed. No point in losing a year of eligibility if you are recovering.

Disclaimer: I don't know anyone on the inside and this is pure speculation on my part.
