GRAGG NEW HC in 2014

Relative to Delaney (and Pflugrad) Gragg is young. He's in the top five of all-time Griz favorites. He will have a much longer honeymoon than most. I just hope his HC candidacy in 2014 is contingent upon UM having a successful offense in 2013.

Count me in the corner of giving SG a shot. I will support his being named head coach (if and when that day comes). Let's see - Played for the Griz and was awesome - Check. Played in the NFL - Check. Is young and can relate to recruits - Check. Is a disciplinarian - Check. Will likely want to stay for at least four to five years to build his reputation - check. I think the positives outweigh the negatives at this point. The only worry I have is his ability to make adjustments during a game. I believe he is very smart and that his degree was in math and possibly he taught math (or Trig, Calc, Algebra, etc). Math folks can often be linear thinkers. Hopefully he can overcome that trait and tap into his creative side as OC.

Young? Were recruits even born at the time he played?
:dope:

Taken in the second round of the 1995 draft by the NY Giants (okay, 18-year-old freshmen, assuming 2013 recruit, were just born), played for the 49ers in 2000-2004, and the Jets in 2005 (freshman probably a fan, might have his jersey).

What about coaching experience?? HC at a high school in Oregon losing seasons, I believe. Any other experience at college level? I don't have the answer to that. Just wondering if anyone else has knowledge of his actual coaching experience. Being an outstanding player doesn't always translate into being a great coach, let alone a HC.

I (like everyone else) really have no idea what kind of head coach SG would make -- and that is part of the problem. Being an HC has little to do with any of the things that SG has proven on his resume. He might be the best HC ever -- or may turn out to be not so good. Recall that some thought Delaney was a good get. Somehow, to me, it seems the Griz FB program should reduce the risk at least a little bit and find someone with some, any, headcoaching experience.

i think gragg could be a good head coach honestly. although this and the DD thread have had me curious about something. is it far more risky for all time griz greats to put their playing reputation on the line to be a coach? i have yet to meet a single riz fan that doesn't absolutely love DD. but what if he became coach and had a couple losing seasons? wonder what the reaction would be....

same goes for gragg. by all accounts he's a great person. and there is no doubt that he's maybe the best linemen to ever play in the big sky. he went on to have a brilliant nfl career and he's a griz legend. will be really interesting to see if any of that becomes tarnished to some fans after a couple "down" seasons.

on this note....if i was DD i would NEVER consider coaching atum. better to be always known as the G.O.A.T. :thumb:

What will his legacy be when the Griz put 2012 and the mehem(sp) surrounded by it behind and become national contenders again? We have a very good returning group of young men who SC has the utmost of confidence in. As well as the rest of the coaching staff. I even believe that RE is beginning to learn that a balanced approach to the Universities business is important. That there are many entities and they all must learn to work together. Why would SC's playing reputation be put on the line? He played and he succeeded. Is he suppost to just go away from something he loves at a place that gave him so much just because he is afraid to fail? SC is one hard working mofo and very thick skinned.
ilovethecats you are an interesting poster. You can be very middle of the road and then throw out something stupid like this. Besides our worst year is behind us and our best is yet to come. If I were a cat fan I would be more worried about SHSU and making it out of the quarter finals than SC and his legacy.

I agree with your response about Gragg or DD. They are competitive and shouldn't worry about putting their playing names on the line to coach. But I don't think you are in the right for calling out ILTC. He is asking an honest question. Calm down.

wow. where to start.... :?

first, i AM worried about sam houston state. they are a hell of a team and more than capable of winning friday night. but unlike the team...i don't have to do shit for the game. i have my tickets. my garage is stocked with beer for the tailgate. i'll grab liquor on my way to the stadium and my happy ass will be partying about 3:00 on friday. but in the meantime, i am more than capable of being able to type my opinion AND be nervous for the game.

and i never said that the griz would definitely not be a good team under gragg. i suggested that if he did have a couple down years, (i even put "down" in quotes because your teams down years are not like others) if it would tarnish his legacy as a player. is that really stupid? people talk about it all the time. do you really not think that some fans views of michael jordan are not skewed because he has proved to be a terrible owner? they are out there.

my only OPINION is that if i was a god like DD is....i would be very cautious to ever come back and coach for the griz because it would be hard for him to do as a coach what he did as a player. sorry that is such a stupid opinion to have.

I like this point of view and agree with it. Disciplined programs are a precusor to winning (period).
Undisciplined teams are unsuccessful on & off the field. You are only intitled to what you are willing to work for...no exceptions!

I read this and thought of Bart Starr. Great player, terrible coach.

agreed. and i guess my initial question was just the added pressure that comes with being great. there is more pressure on lebron james to be great than jeremy lin. more pressure on aaron rogers than chad henne. this isn't to say their bosses don't expect them to win because they all have that obvious pressure. i just feel when you are god-like during your playing days that coaching can come with the same expectations despite being too completely different animals.

i think if lulay ever decided to come back and coach for the cats he'd be risking his legacy far more than if cody carpenter came back to coach. just my opinion of course. stupid opinion actually.... ;)

Bottom line: We can't afford to pay a good coach. Gragg needs a job. We are a school of insider hiring. Done deal and easy for Haslam to sell to the dynamic leader in Main Hall. :thumb:

There will be a National Search at the end of next season, mark my words. I wouldn't pencil in Gragg. :thumb:

They can search the universe, but unless they're willing to make a long-term commitment to somebody, and pay a decent salary, who will they attract?
