Goodbye to Joe Torre

The Torre era is officially over.

He turned down a 1 year contract to manage the Yankees next year.

Let the Mattingly era begin!

I would have told George to shove it anyway. They treated Torre very poorly this season. Donny Baseball will do a fine job. Torre should just go spend all that money he made.

Good for Joe. I'm sorry to see him leave, but I am glad he is leaving on his own terms. I thought Steinbrenner announcing in the middle of a playoff series that Torre's job was on the line was one of the worst moves I have ever seen...

I hope the Yankees get somebody good. I know Mattingly is the heir-apparent, and he would probably do a fine job, but I hope they are at least open to considering other options, too. There are a lot of great managers out there, and a lot of them would probably love to manage in the Bronx.

I want Mattingly or Giardi because they were both Yankees and know what that job entails. I DO NOT want LaRussa, too much ego.

High standards...12 seasons under Joe and 12 playoff appearances.

Turned down 5M with 3M incentive if he got back to W-Series

I think Joe would have said no to $10M.

I agree do you think he'll manage this year somewhere?

He said he wanted to, but after this season and the BS during the playoffs he would be crazy not to hit the beach and spend some of the millions of Steinbrenners money he has in the bank.

I agree that Mattingly is the most likely replacement. He's well loved in NY, has been with the team for 4 years on this hitch and has the respect of the players. Not to mention a fine career that would have been Hall of Fame if not for his back injuries. His only drawback is no experience as a manager. But I still think he'll be the man. Hopefully he's aware that in King George's 34 years as owner, I believe the official count is 20 managers. You take off Torre's 12 years and that's 19 managers in 22 years. Sure, George has "stepped down" and handed the reins to his boys, but do you think he'll really be out of the picture? I think George paid 6.5 million to CBS for the Yanks in 1973....and the current value of the franchise is about a billion....nice return. Other owners buy teams for the appreciation, but count on operating losses....George got the appreciation and made money at the same time.

Anyhow, enough out of me. So long Joe. Great run. You are a class act all the way. Enjoy the fruits of your labors.

The New York Yankees are valued at $1.2 Billion

And when you are talking a billion, another .2 is 200 million....it's good to be precise when you are talking that sort of money. I'm really crappy with numbers (especially when they are so unrealistically out of my range of conception) but I think 1.2 billion present worth amounts to roughly a 184.6% return on his original 6.5 million investment.

Actually no, 6.5 million times 184.6 is roughly 1.2 billion, but wouldn't the return be more like 1846%....I don't know, it boggles my mind....or as Chazz Michael Michaels said, it's "mind bottling."

What, did I miss something?
