Rocky Mountain College went up to Havre and left a winner in the first round of the Frontier Conference playoffs, knocking off Montana State-Northern 73-73 on Tuesday behind a 32 points and 10 rebounds from Jared Samuelson.

The Billings native shot 13-for-22 from the field and scored with three seconds left to give the Battlin’ Bears the win.

Rocky took a 37-32 lead into halftime and then spent most of the second half staving off the Lights. MSU-N did claim a five-point lead with two minutes to go, but the Battlin’ Bears wrestling control back. Rocky shot 52 percent from the field in the victory.

Rocky at Carroll in one Friday semifinal and Lewis and Clark State at Western in the other. Nice little tourney they have in the Frontier. #1 seed (Carroll) gets a bye, the other 6 play quarterfinals at higher seed arena, then semis and final hosted by highest seeds on their home floors.

Rewards for good regular seasons but opportunities for underdogs to win road games and advance.

Almost guaranteed both Frontier semifinals out draw the BSC semis...and with "real" basketball atmospheres to boot.

As good as the Griz are this year, we're this good even with two defections--Jared and Alphonso Anderson--and one major injury, Donaven Dorsey. With those three, we might have redshirted both Nicholas and Falls. Just amazing the talent DeCuire has attracted.

If TDC stays at Montana, it’s scary to think what they might accomplish. Too bad they’re not in a conference where it matters and gets attention.

I definately agree that Travis has been able to recruit top-notch (Big Sky-wise) talent and I think he has curbed his in-game "ref-working", mostly by saying less and only making noise occasionally when apropos. Travis will definitely garner serious future interest from bigger programs if the Griz continue to succeed.

Jared Samuelson was not a defection. He was a borderline legit D1 player, IMO and wisely went where he could make a significant difference. He is NOT as good as Akoh or Nicholas. I don't know the story about Alphonso Anderson.

I agree that Dorsey would have made a dramatic/significant difference in this year's team. He should be a huge addition in future teams.
