Good, Bad, Ugly - MVSU

Good:
- Gus throwing 21-26 for 251 and 4 TDs. Had a stretch of 17 straight completions
- Calhoun once again finding the end zone, twice. 61 yards on only 8 carries (7.6 ypc)
- Curran responding very well to being benched last week and grabbing 2 big catches for 2 big scores. Also made some nice blocks on the edge
- Homan continuing to look very strong amd reliable, this time in the slot
- Bingham catching his first TD on a perfectly placed high ball from Gus. That dude doesn't seem to drop anything.
- Purdy kicking his first FG as a Griz, a 37 yarder
- Buss hitting and tackling.....everyone.
- Straham with a great pick 6 thanks to a tipped screen by Kidder
- Kidder pressuring and hitting the QB and RBs a ton
- 2 interceptions (McKinley and Straham)
- created 5 turmovers
- broke a record by allowing -61 yards rushing.....yes minus 61
- saw some good stuff by the 2s and 3s....a crushing QB hit by Cy Sirmon comes to mind. Reese seemed to throw darts too.
- beating that team by 60 points and not playing down to their level

Bad:
- letting they march and score on that first drive
- Brady fumbling and turning it over on our first drive
- 2 more missed PATs, one wide and one blocked. This needs to get fixed before it costs us a game

Ugly:
- the way MVSU plays football
- the cheap crap by MVSU especially the shot on Semenza
- the terrible call by the referee on Banks interception in the end zone....literally untouched and gets a PI

Feel free to add. 4-1 and Sac State next.

Am I missing something on the Semenza cheap shot? Watching the replay right now but was it simply out of frustration and Tim happened to be the easy target?

I mean I can see lineman and receivers/defenders and such getting into it but to mow over our unsuspecting kicker? Seriously? What the hell did he do other than contribute some of the sixty some points handed out in this ass kicking?

Just something I haven't seen very often that's all. Good thing the refs were looking the other way as well as most of the guys in maroon.

Great to get a bunch of backups snaps in an actual game. Glad that Mike Ralston appears to have found a position he can grow with. I may be late to this, but noticed a lot of linemen cleaning off tacklers in piles - a sign to me that the nasty attitude is returning.

Something's changed in Bob's philosophy - second straight game they've deferred after winning the toss. He may be less stubborn than I thought.

The kicking thing is still hot mess. F$&King reffing is as bad cumulatively as I can ever remember.

let me echo your comments about Ralston. Really could use him to step up and secure that right tackle spot next year.
Similarly, good to see Simis get a catch. But goddamn, boy, the two you dropped were right in your hands!
Chalich & Phillips....not overly impressive....but they haven't exactly seen a lot of game speed action, so I'll give them a pass.

Hooked, was the interception tipped first?

Yep it was awesome.....Kidder read it perfectly, tipped it, and then Straham and receiver grabbed it at same time but Straham ripped it away like he was on a mission and went to the house. I didn't know it was tipped live in the stadium but then watched the replay on DVR this morning to see it more clearly. Kidder had a great game. Tons of pressure.

Interesting. Like you, I didn't see it tipped. I saw Kidder get a great rush, put heat on the qb, and raise his hands. Didn't look at the game later. Thx.

+ to the good- Josh Sandry's hard hitting and smart play. I absolutely love how he plays the game. He and Buss play with a lot of passion and emotion. Also am loving how Strahm gets into an opponent's head most every game. I watch him closely to figure out how he gets opposing players to show their frustration? I have not seen any dirty play, unless it is during pile ups. Does he trash talk them every chance he gets? Anyone with some insight on Strahm's secret(s) for getting into opposing player's heads would be appreciated.

Also the CB play in absence of JR Nelson has been better and more consistent than I expected. I have a feeling the GRIZ CB play will be terrific, once Nelson is back 100%. It may take a few games for him to get to that level, but am I ever excited for our CB depth and play.

You guys must have been away from the action on that tipped ball by Kidder as it was obvious from the SW side.

I am not gonna argue that the ball MIGHT have been tipped slightly by Kidder, which I never saw, but it was all Strahm that made the play. The ball was still a 90% WR catch until Strahm ripped it out of there. By far his best play as a Griz. Now if he can just chill and not commit stupid personal fouls way after the whistle.

Strahm is a smart cookie. I can't believe this is a topic that hasn't been brought up more, considering how much criticism he's gotten about last years personal fouls.

This year, he has taken pride in getting in the oppositions heads and under their skin. He's been exercising his right to "free space" very well, and kept his cool so as not to fall victim to the "second guy to throw a punch always gets caught" phenomenon. Is it 3 personal fouls that he's drawn so far? Maybe more? It's been a game-changer, I've noticed he has a knack for drawing them on 2nd and 3rd downs. Smart player.

You are spot on and they even had him on the Griz sports report talking a little bit about that last night. He drew a lot of personal fouls last year but I don't think he's even had one on him this year, has he? And to your point he has definitely created at least two or three from the opposing team.

He's showing some incredible instincts and playing with his "personality". I used to do the same thing playing basketball. Just light taunting, nothing that a ref can justify calling, but gets the opposition a little pissed and sets them on edge.

I hope the younger defensive players are taking notes.

Also GOOD, Joey Counts played and didn't get hurt!
BAD-- MVST worst coached team I have ever seen

It was clearly tipped, douche bag, and had it not been, would've gotten to the intended receiver before Strahm could've made a play on the ball. Great plays by both Kidder AND Strahm

Strahm getting in guys heads may be due to more than one tactic. But the one tactic I have noticed watching the games on television is that he is often SLOW to get up from and let up the guy he has just tackled. He seems to have to PUSH on them to get up and then he occasionally accidentally DRAGS a foot over knee over them when he does get up. Also seems he might offer a subtle comment as he picks himself up. Nothing there at all to draw a flag but just enough activity to set the pot simmering. He has learned the fine art of needling, I think, as opposed to some of the more observable penalized actions of the past. Smart kid.

Don't know about absolute worst, but certainly one of the worst. And I'm guessing that among MSVU's many deficiencies (no money) is the lack of a strength and conditioning coach. They certainly had some big fellas on the offensive line -- several in the 300+ range, I gather -- but some of them looked downright flabby. There's a reason the defense of the Griz (and earlier opponents) ended up chasing their poor QB all over the damn place. First, too many guys in their O line are big, but very slow. Second, I'm no expert, but it seemed like their footwork was piss poor and didn't get any better when all that flab started to slow them down even more. And finally, when they did manage to get a block (usually with some jersey :D ), they couldn't sustain it when the Griz D-Lineman made any kind of move. Hopefully, our guys don't get delusions of grandeur from it -- they are not likely to see a worse O-Line any time soon.
