Good, Bad, Ugly - Furman

Well, technically EVERY penalty “keeps drives alive”…is there ever a GOOD time for a penalty?

Tacking fifteen onto a change of possession for a late hit out of bounds is stupid. If only it were important in the flow of the game.

There was a tv shot of #43 after the game talking to Bobby. It was obvious he was apologizing for the late hit. Bobby just smiled and nodded his acceptance .

Bad - what happened to creative play calling? A few trick plays is not what I am talking about. How about rolling McDowell out? How about targeting the TEs? Dogged determination to establish the run nearly cost us.

Bad - runners trying too hard to reach the edges and missing cutback opportunities. Furman was over-committing to pursuit. If you watch carefully there were cut back lanes.

That Fontes screen going towards the north end is a big example. Huge cut back lane that looked like a sure TD. They end up kicking, and I believe missing, a FG on that drive.

Yep, looked like Fontes could have just ridden his lineman into the endzone. Really bad drop, point blank to convert huge first down later on. Some of it is play calling, but Clifton was holding onto the ball too long, missing some quick hits, and opportunities in the flats, and some poor execution last night with half our oline resting. Furman is an absolute top FCS defense so I'll give them some credit.

Bad (Ugly?): their first long completion…10 guys on the LOS, and a 5-yard slant is almost taken to the house. Not sure what that alignment was but I don’t recall seeing it ever this year.

Yeah, screw that cover zero bulls**t….i don’t ever want to see them run that again. Got burned again when they did it the very next series and Huff busted through the middle….never run that s**t again

We didn’t block real well at times. Probably credit to their defense, but there were plays, a few screens come to mind, that looked like big gainers with blockers out in front that somehow fizzled into little or nothing when we wiffed on a block.

Also, there were times where there were screens blocked up REAL well, and the back/receiver didn’t follow his blocks. There was one that would have either been a tuddy or a big gain where it was blocked perfectly for the back to cut inside for a huge gain but he inexplicably cut it outside of his blocks. I was SCREAMING at the tv “FOLLOW YOUR DAMN BLOCKS”.

Yep. I remember that ... my wife (and dogs, if they could) will attest that I hollered: "Inside! You idiot!" Of course, that's unfair, really. They have a split second and pure instinct to decide ... and sometimes they're wrong.

He literally cut outside and ran RIGHT into the guy his blocker was blocking. Went from a 20 yard gain to a 4-5 yard gain…

Ugly. The roughing call on the Furman punt. I couldn’t tell from the NEZ but seeing it again on TV-Not even touched. Very poor call, and a big penalty - essentially a turnover.

Our guy went into the punter's plant leg. That's a personal foul every time, even without the acting from the punter.

As unnecessary as hitting someone out of bounds. Wait... Sorry, like any of that matters. Nevermind.
