Good, Bad, Ugly - EWU

Seems to me that most people that complain about chop blocks really have no idea what a chop block is.

The rule states that the person being blocked has to already be engaged by another player. Last week, JLM was called for blocking below the waist on a player who no one else engaged. Yesterday, in the play I am referring, there was more than one legit chop block. Having said that, I wasn't bitching about the play, I was bitching about the officiating.

Good - Beat EWU. This is great, actually.

Bad - Have got to play 4 quarters of football to be a playoff contender.

Ugly - Officiating was up to Big Sky standards. Not a single holding call, at least that I can remember. But there was a ton. And EWU was chop-blocking all day. One slow-mo replay on TV showed almost the entire Grizzly defense get mowed down like they were hit by machine gun fire. All of it more egregious than what JLM got called for last week.

Observation/question- Back to playing 4 quarters of football: Is Baer (sp?) a total dipwad, or just diabolical? Does he intentionally have our defense suck that bad just to see what the opponent is capable of before he shuts it down? Or is he just unable to call a different scheme before the half? I don't get it. The defense was sh#t the first half, and I am not convinced that it was player execution.

Good: Brandon Purdy. I no longer worry when he comes on to kick a FG. He’s got total confidence, and you can see it on the field.
Good: EWU came into game averaging 326 ypg passing. We held them to well under that # Saturday.
Good: Wilson. What a gift he’s been. Sure wish he wasn’t a senior!
Good: Jace Lewis is Dante 2.0. Dude is just a machine on the field
Good: Humphrey’s cadence. Got EWU to jump 3 or 4 times, which helped sustain some key drives.
Good: 1st half TOP. It eventually sucked the life out of the EWU D, as they were absolutely gassed in the 4th quarter.


Bad; Conan Beaver: Hate to call the kid out, but I rewatched the game tonight and he routinely was being blown back into Humphreys on passing plays. He’s actually a better run blocker (at least in this game)....although they primarily seem to run to the right side behind Mallory & Cook...
Bad: I understand why they did it, but Cam rarely made it to his 2nd or 3rd read...always took the first option, and didn’t let much develop...the one shot they took downfield early resulted in a nice PI pentacle against EWU, thought they should have given Toure & Akem more opportunities to win battles...hopefully can improve upon that this weekend.
Bad: Humphreys took some REALLY hard shots. Some necessary, some very unnecessary. My heart was in my throat on a couple of those.


Ugly: The three blatant facemasking calls that weren’t flagged. I sometimes wonder what the fuck refs are watching, these three plays (JLM, Flowers, Villanueva) were three of those times.
Ugly: JLM’s first punt return attempt....not sure what happened there, but he basically just effed it up! Lol
Ugly: on the first drive of the 2nd quarter they had 1st & 5 at the 21 yard line and couldn’t get 5 yards on 3 downs. Then went for it on 4th down instead of taking the points (the ball thrown at Elwell’s feet). Would have been a 36 yard FG (maybe the wind wasn’t favorable from that direction?)
Ugly: After EWU’s first TD, Montana came onto the field after the KO and the ref was holding up play to allow EWU to do something? Then by the time they release Humphreys to go ahead, there was only 5 seconds on the play clock and we get tagged with a delay of game. WTF?
Ugly: Sandry’s angle on the 2nd long pass play that led to their 2nd TD. Horrible.
Ugly: Tackling on that entire 2nd EWU TD drive. Glad they got that cleaned up.

GREAT: Literally the rest of the game, from the 6:30 point of the 2nd quarter on.

#21 of EWU - Complete punk ass douchenozzle. Wish that motherfucker had been laid out at some point in the game.

I don't know where this resides, exactly, but how about Elwell "intercepting" the pass obviously thrown to Touree (I believe; might have been Akem). He just reached up and snatched that mofo out of the air like it was a C-Note blowing in the wind after a Brinks truck accident.
