Good, Bad, Ugly - Cal Poly

Good:

- the Griz defense completely redeemed themselves from the week prior. Held CP to 9 points….they were averaging 30 ppg coming into Missoula. They only gained 60 yards in the second half and had one first down. Incredible really
- Ford has taken some abuse on here and has struggled, but thought he had his best game as a Griz yesterday and had a pick as well. A couple nice tackles on the edge too.
- Rocker Jr was awesome! Had 10 runs and picked up some big first downs but also had 3 catches for 50 yards including a big 41 yard pick up on 3rd and 14
- Eli did Eli things again. 18 carries for 123 and 2 TDs. Also had 5 catches for 43
- Wortham continues to dominate. 10 catches for 84 yards and 1 TD
- 4 picks by the defense….one each from Lawler, Otlewski. Ford and Leonard.
- the pick 6 by Lawler was awesome and timely. Great pressure by Detrick there too. Lawler has been pretty huge stepping up in Fords absence
- Ah Yat not with his best game but still went 27-41 for 257 and 1 TD and 1 INT. Had an incredible throw when he eluded pressure and hit Davis on the run
- great to see Bohannon back!

Bad:

- the pre-snap penalties with illegal substitutions and too many men on the field. That was uncharacteristic
- throwing the ball deep into double coverage on 3rd and 1s. Pick up the damn first down.
- seeing Johnson go down on the OL, hope he is okay
- the offense for the first half

Ugly:

- turnovers in CP territory when driving to score. Have to take care of football (3 total. A turnover on downs, a pick in the end zone, and that fumbled reverse sweep)

First 6-0 start since 2009! Go Griz! Please feel free to add!

Hate to see the struggles we had yesterday, but they're the kind of struggles you'd prefer happen against a team like Cal Poly at home.

The defense played their best game of football, and it was incredibly encouraging to see.

It feels like we have a championship football team hiding in there somewhere, and I hope it starts to come out a little more as the season wears on.
 
Good - except for the touchdown drive for Cal Poly, the defense turned in their first full game performance of the season and then got us off of the goose egg with the pick six.

Bad - the first half offensive performance was not what we expected, and the final score should have been at least 42-9, and that is with Eli sliding down short of the goal line on the last TD so we kneel it out to end the game.

Ugly - the continued complaining about the calls that aren't made, we can't do anything about that, they are just going to call the game the way they call it, but the bottom line is they called 6 penalties on Cal Poly for 70 yards, 7 on Montana for 51 that were mostly for pre-snap, undisciplined violations, so I think that if the refs sucked, they sucked both ways. The only call I happened to see that was missed was the punt by Cal Poly where the punter held the ball, the center was 10 yards down the field by the time the kick was in the air, but it went for a touchback, so it didn't matter.

I would agree that Ford is improving but if his “best game” is continuing to watch receivers backs after they blow past him on multiple big receptions, I hope his ceiling is much higher. Even on his interception he was behind the receiver which allowed him to be in the right spot for the tip drill grab. He delivered some good plays. Lawler has steadily improved and stepped up without Loud, so I am sure playing time will do nothing but help Ford.
 
Great: Eli's running in the 4th Qtr as he made jump cuts and sliced and diced through the CP defense on the way to 2 scores. Eli's pass catching out of the backfield on flare routes. Getting Monte Gillman into the game. Special teams punt and kickoff return coverage. Tanner Huff and Ian Finch and the team that set them up to make the tackles. Pressure and sacks - we finally got to the QB today and got them off their spot which led to INTs. Kellen Dietrich's pressure caused the first INT. KAY on option runs. KAYs reverse pivot/drop step pitch to Gillman - just sick!

Good: Team defense - bring it like this every game. Tackling improved. Defensive pursuit angles were better - just saw one bad angle. Blocks by WRs and TEs. Good to see the defensive secondary playing zone at times during the game. Great adjustments by the defense and offense. Special teams returns.

Bad: Still have room for improvement on defense against the Go routes. Falling in love with running KAY - we need him for the entire season.

Ugly: Griz disorganized on both offense and defense which led to penalties. Turnovers and almost turnovers (need the ball to score). Cal Poly taking out Diffenbach in the 4th Qtr.

Absolutely, it happens all the time. The linemen usually count to three and then release, but if you look at that play, the live shot was from a wide angle and you see the long snapper hauling ass down the middle of the field and the punter still has the ball.

Until the ball is kicked, actually striking the kickers foot, they are still the offense. Once he kicks it, they can throw or run or all else so the linemen cannot release until the ball is kicked. I don't need to provide a link, I have no burden of proof, if you played football at any level, this is a rule that you are aware of.
The point was, the penalties were even in the game and if this were flagged, it would not have affected anything because it would have been declined.

That is not a penalty in college. On a punt, any player can release after the ball is snapped.

You are incorrect. In college they can release right away. In the NFL they must wait.

What’s funnier is that you claim it absolutely happens all the time yet I’ve literally never seen it once in my life
 
This is a good point. I saw the rush too on the play, and said to my group that that rusher caused the pick, but I didn't know who it was.

My son played football at GF High with Detrick's dad. I had a nice talk with the Detricks on the field after the game a few games ago.

I don't have a burden to prove anything here, I will stick by that. I owe no explanations to you or anyone else.
I do acknowledge that I am incorrect and that the rule in college does allow release before the kick, not the first time I'm wrong or last. Does that make you feel better now?
