Santa Clara transfer will likely take Martin’s spot. Missed the entire season with an injury but was productive during the 21-22 season and even scored 11 points against the Griz in December of 2021! Looks like a solid addition! Now it’s time to go get big guys!

He barely played at Santa Clara and is coming off of an injury that kept him out the entire year last year. Does he move the needle? What about the 21-22 shows productivity? He only played 14 minutes a game.

He had some good games. He put up 15 points against Gonzaga so the potential is there. The WCC is no slouch either.

Missing the entire year is a tad concerning but the cats took a chance on a couple guys with injuries and it paid off. This feels similar to Moody where he was somewhat productive at his old school but has a chance to really blow it open at UM.

Had some good outings against some good teams….including the Griz and Gonzaga:

2021-22: Played in all 33 games with one start ... Averaged 5.1 ppg and shot 44 percent from the floor ... Start came on the road against Cal in which he scored 11 points (3-5 3pt) and pulled down a career-high five rebounds ... Seven double-figure scoring games ... Reached season-high of 15 points twice - on the road at Pepperdine (6-6 FG) and vs. TCU (11/22) ... 14 pts vs. Pacific (1/31) ... 11 pts, four rebounds, three steals vs. Montana (12/19) ... 10 points against San Jose State (12/21) and No. 1 Gonzaga (1/15) ... Three games with nine points ... Knocked down multiple 3-point buckets in eight games including three games with three triples.

2020-21: Saw action in all 20 games, including two starts ... averaged 5.6 points per game … led the team in 3-point field-goal percentage (43.9) ... three double-digit scoring outings ... pulled down a career-high tying four rebounds against Colorado St. (Dec. 22) ... set a career-high with two blocks against USC (Dec. 29) ... got his first career start against Pepperdine (Feb. 20) ... started again at Gonzaga (Feb. 25), setting career-highs with 18 points, seven made field goals, four made 3-pointers and 37 minutes playing time.

As long as he is an upgrade over Martin, then this is a great addition. I think that will be the case….easily.

He is a rotation guy from a good program and his stat line shows him to be a good shooter. He certainly does have good potential. I don't know enough about the rest of his game to make any sort of prediction, but TD sees something he likes in this kid and I would trust his judgement over mine anyway. The injury thing is a concern but players often come back even stronger and more motivated than ever. Nobody was super excited for Moody's arival either. I think he turned out okay, don't you think?

It will certainly be interesting to see how this all works out.

We can agree to disagree. I am fine with that. There have been some good points made.

But with this signing, can we agree that the Bannan replacement needs to be nothing short of a home run?

Oh we definitely need a big man splash. But that’s not what they were trying to do here they were trying to get their upgrade over Martin. now a stud big man has to be next

Santa Clara is a good program. One thing I noticed is that he came in a a freshman at 6’3 167 lbs and was listed last year at 6’5 205 lbs. He already has a degree from a good school so he is a mature guy that has also matured physically.

A few thoughts:

1. Not hard to find an upgrade over Martin. DeCuire’s fascination with Martin was always somewhat perplexing.

2. Does Williams move the needle - yes. But by how much? To me this is a tinkering around the edges move and not a big splash. A lot easier to make a big splash with a wing in the portal than Bannan-replacing bigs.

3. If the WSU big man rumors come to fruition, you will be adding two guys that were physically unable to play a single game last year. Maybe a big deal, maybe not. But it’s not nothing.

4. You still have a distribution issue to deal with. Let’s assume they hit a home run with Bannan’s replacement. The odds of that Big being able to lead the team in assists is very low. Almost 90% of Moody’s 3’s were assisted.

5. I am not sure how many scholarships are available now, but one obviously needs to go to a Big. If they have one after that and can get a distributing PG, I think it could work out. But by my count they only have 1 left (12 current):

1. Whitney
2. Moody
3. Kerr
4. Henderson
5. Do. Thomas
6. Di. Thomas
7. Money Williams
8. Giordan Williams
9. Nap
10. Davidson
11. Reynolds
12. Oke

Vasquez (Covid year) doesn’t count against the 13 scholly cap if Montana chooses to pay for it.

If WSU big is coming, there’s no need for Grant. Get a bigger wing or a point that can distribute, in my opinion.

I hope DeCuire can now continue to recruit bigger guards. Likely, he plans on using Williams mostly at the 3. But 6’5 205 is decent size, and he’s good from 3, so this is a move in the right direction.
The top teams in the league had bigger, more physical/versatile guards.

I'm kind of of the opinion that we need 2 bigs to replace Bannan and Anderson. Oke was definitely good down the stretch of conference play but he's not the biggest. Is Rhett Reynolds gonna be ready to step in? We'll see I guess but ideally I would like to get 2. Maybe see if we can poach Nigel Burris too!

I found this interesting. Compared conference only stats using per 40 min of game time. Used 21-22 year for Williams.

Code:
per 40 min PTS RB AST
Giordan Williams 15.1 4.1 2.5
Lonnell Martin 8.8 3.4 3.2
Josh Vazquez 13.0 2.7 1.8
Aanen Moody 18.8 4.1 1.6

I found the 3 point shooting was fairly similar between Williams (2.3/40 min 39.3%), Martin (2.1/40 min 38.0%), and Vazquez (2.6/40 min 40.6%). Big difference is Williams hits more 2PT shots and hits a higher percentage than Martin or Vazquez. Williams hit (3.3/40min 55.2%), Martin hit only (1.0/40 min 38.7%) and Vazquez just (1.2/40 min 35.3%). In fact Martin attempted less 2PT shots every 40 minutes (2.5) than Williams made. For comparison, Moody made 3.1 per 40 min and shot 47.8%.

Big question - can Williams keep up the productivity when playing more minutes? If he can, he could turn out to be a nice addition to the offense and appears to add an element that Martin and Vazquez don't.

This is a good breakdown. One thing Martin couldn’t do well was penetrate and get to the rim. Everything I’ve seen and read said Williams can do exactly that while playing much better defense. This is definitely an upgrade.

Here’s a couple quick hits of him getting to the rim like I was mentioning
