Getting back to the chipper game

What will it take to get back to the National Championship game??? We will need to put a defense on the field which ranks no lower than Top 10 nationally, and even that may not be enough. A top 5 ranked defense would give us a legit chance. I assure you that trying to out-score playoff opponents each week will NOT get us there!

You can sign 40 WRs, and it will not happen.

I hate to burst that huge bubble (in your brain) but if you go back and look at the roster for the last 5 years and adjust for the fact that we no longer use a tight end we have had the following number of receivers on our roster.

Current 2016 roster - 19 wide receivers
2015 roster - 19 wide receivers
2014 roster - 18 wide receivers and tight ends
2013 roster - 22 wide receivers and tight ends
2012 roster - 19 wide receivers and tight ends

And THAT'S why we're not getting back to the chipper!

Most teams that make it to the chipper kick off at both the start and halftime of games......

Delaney knew this....another prime example of this Stitt guy being a terrible hire.

Impresses pedestrian fans, but only supports that it is ridiculous to have 20 receivers on the team. Here's why, but it will probably fly right over yours, and other's heads. I assure you that, among the receivers you listed for the above years, 4-6 of them were tight ends. Tight ends can also be considered offensive linemen, since they block on more plays than they act as a receiver. They are also more valuable on Special teams than wide receivers. They are critical to an effective running game. So, to try to spin your point that the previous teams had as many WRs is just, well pure B.S.!

Yeah, they want me banned cause I make them look foolish with their homer comments about Griz football. If you can't compete intellectually, just BAN HIM!

This is a Pandoras box question...

If UM had beaten Poly (lost by 1) and Weber (lost by 3 in OT) and beat Liberty (played badly) they go into the playoffs at 10-1 and are home until the Championship Game...

But...

If UM doesn't beat ISU (Lucky win...) The Griz are not even in the playoffs.

My opinion is that every year I want UM to have a chance at the NC. And that means we fans have been spoiled. Thats all a fan can ask for, The rest is up to who you play and when in the playoffs.

There are always 2-3 games each season which could go either way, and are decided by a play or two. If you recall, during the Hauck years, we seemed to win all of those game, sometimes by miraculous plays, or gaffs by our opponents. If fact, sometimes I felt like Hauck had made a pact with the devil cause he always seemed to come out with a win during closely-contested games.

I agree with you that my expectation is that we compete for a national championship each year. Yes, we are spoiled, just like Ohio State fans, Alabama fans, Michigan fans, USC fans, Oregon fans. All of those fan bases EXPECT their team to compete for a NC every year.

And why shouldn't we? We have so many recruiting advantages over the rest of the FCS teams, that these expectations should be a no-brainer.

Thanks, I really appreciate you proving my point.

Of our current wide receivers we have the following that could easily have played tight end in college.

Jed Nagler Fr. WR 6-4 210 Whitefish, Mont. / Whitefish HS
Josh Horner Jr. WR 6-5 220 Great Falls, Mont. / C.M. Russell HS
Mike Ralston R-Jr. WR 6-5 260 Eugene, Ore. / Sheldon HS
Colin Bingham R-Fr. WR 6-3 220 Missoula, Mont. / Big Sky HS

Just because we do not have them listed as tight ends does not mean that we do not have tight end type players. Big deal if they are lined up in the slot, they can still knock the snot out of a db or outside linebacker on a running play.

On the 2013 roster we had 2 fullbacks and 7 tight ends on that team. We don't have tight ends or fullbacks anymore. You want them to all be linebackers????

It kills me every time someone bitches because the Griz don't have 5 chippers in a row....or there are not 24 Griz on the All BSC first team.....you know....because with all the recruiting advantages....there is no way a kid that goes somewhere else should be any good....especially in the BSC....

Not only do I want to get to the chipper again, I want to win it. I watched enough losing in the chipper already!

Uh, nice try. Not too many 210-220 lb. tight ends in FCS football. Not too many LBs get their snot knocked out of them by 210 lb. slot receivers. It worked so well last season, too! Our running game was mirror image of the Pittsburgh Steelers, with that stud slot receiver destroying those LBs! :thumb:

In fact, I hear that the NDSU All-American LB is still smarting from a shot he took from our slot receiver in the playoff game last season..... hell, that play alone allowed us to gain 2 of our 6 yards of rushing!

Nothing worked well against NDSU the second time.

But if you don't think making the move from Nacaratto to Horner as the slot guy made a difference you were watching a different team than I was last year. Was like night and DAY out there from a run blocking and pass protection standpoint.

I vote to ban all posters who use "chipper" in reference to the National Championship from this point forward.
