GEORGIA STATE, can’t wait, GAME THREAD

Akoh with 22, Rorie 14, Oguine 15, and Pridgett and Falls each 10. Falls was the difference maker in this one. Game changed with his shooting and passing. Sorry but that may be worst game I’ve ever seen Moorhead play. Thank goodness for Timmy!
I almost wanted Moorhead out of the game, he was so off. Spark plug, Timmy, got the crowd going.

Can't have 3 TOs and 4 PFs from him in his minutes.

timmy changed the game.great passes inside, good def on Simonds and of course finally 3's. Crowd was good and active , truly helps. Good start and not playing that well but 1-0. Get on the ride to the Sweet 16!

Great Win! The Griz, and to be fair Georgia State, came out flat and had trouble making shots. #15 for the Panthers (Simonds?) played amazing, but he got embarrassed by Rorie 3 times: once on a crossover to step back, the dunk, and anytime Rorie was guarding him. Those two possibly have futures in the NBA.

Timmy Falls plays with attitude, and I am here for it. He had a couple dumb plays in the first half, but his 2 passes to Akoh in the paint from the outside were brilliant and his 3 point shooting really sealed the lead for the Griz.

Akoh is a madman in the paint. Great hussle and some strong finishes. He missed a couple gimmes but that was really it.

Oguine did Oguine type things and has an amazing block on a fast break dunk.

Overall the defense played well and frustrated everyone except for Simonds.

Decuire went away from a 7 man rotation and had what looked to be 9 players. If this continues and Manuel, Kramer, and Dorsey all play well the Griz will be DEEP.

Sloppy game but the second half had both teams exchanging blows and had some exciting dunks. Crowd was limited but into it. I could tell a difference in the student section, props to the Griz for putting on clinics for the students.

Its the first game, shooting wasn't exactly great, but the Griz had flashes against a very good Panthers team. They will improve. Go Griz!

There were some really great highlights for the Griz, and it was a nice win to start off the season. Falls providing the spark in crunch time was really fun to watch. I just wish more people were there to really get the momentum going. Either way, awesome win!

Areas of concern:
1. We need to rebound 1000% better. I'm sure that will be a point of emphasis with the coaches. Giving up 21 offensive rebounds is not acceptable.

2. I think the ball movement was as good as I have seen from the Griz, but we have to shoot better than 20% from three. Many of them were wide open looks. 5-25 will not get it done during the course of a season.

3. Guard play/Turnovers. To really make a dent in "better" teams, you have to get near perfection from the guards. They have to be in complete control, and 10 turnovers from backcourt players won't usually cut it.

Great win! On to the next with some improvement!

We left 10 points on the scoreboard due to Free Throws. However, we did hit most of them down the stretch. Good, not great crowd. Very solid win despite sloppy play

If it wasn't for Bobby's defense on Simonds in the second half we'd have been in trouble. He can shoot poorly and Travis still wants him on the floor for exactly that reason. His length changed Simonds game entirely in the second half. Big props to Timmy for igniting our offense.

1. Coach DeCuire is a master (among the best I've watched) at in-game adjustments. Could write a lot more, but Montana's mid-second half offensive adjustments were a big factor in a huge momentum swing for the Griz.
2. Mid-2nd half early O resulted in several back-breaking dunks against GS (see #1 above).
3. Simonds had 20 first-half points, but only 10 in the second. Credit incredible defense by Bobby Moorehead (who also had 6 huge rebounds).
4. Ahmaad Rorie much stronger & quicker than last year... his mid- 2nd half free throws & 4 assists kept Griz in game. His two slams were highlight reel quality.
5. Michael Oguine's versatility -- particularly on defense & defensive rebounding (10) and 4 assists -- helped Griz swing the flow of the game in critical stretches. He seemed to have a quiet night on O but shocked to see he scored 15.
6. Jamar Akoh is significantly stronger than last year... a beast in the key... always double-teamed in the paint, but still got his shots up. He will be an important scorer from the FT line for Griz this season.
7. Sayeed Pridgett's incredible versatility & body-twisting flexibility in the paint... and the ability to get shots up in tall timber. I think this will be his break-out year.
8. Timmy Falls showed again how quickly he can turn a game around. Has the ability to consisently hit double digit scoring as 6th man.
9. FIVE Griz in double-digit scoring tonight.
10. The eligibility of Kendal Manuel strengthens this team significantly. A very good shooter who will probably be a high % shooter once he relaxes in his new digs. Hard to believe that Griz have a 4-man guard rotation.
11. Donaven still getting into game shape, but showing big flashes. Played very solid D & will also dramatically improve as he gets stronger.
12. This team could realistically be a 10-man rotation (with Kelby Kramer getting more minutes against certain teams).
13. I have never seen a Montana team this deep at all positions.
14. I think Montana will be a very good free throw shooting team. Shaky tonight, but I don't think a thing to worry about.
15. Griz student section was full and LOUD. I saw glints (hope, hope, hope) of a a return of sorts to the Zoo of yore (of which I was a proud, charter member). General seating was also pretty full.
16. This was the BEST season-opening game since Montana beat Stanford in 2004 (not sure if it was an actual opener).

Great write up GJ! I always enjoy your stuff.

I wish I was off work for the game. I listened to the whole game on the KGVO app. What great SR leadership this team has. 2 years ago, that kind of game was the kind of game we lost. The SR's learned from these type of games. They know how to get the job done in the clutch now. Despite shooting struggles, they refused to let down and they stepped it up in aggressiveness. Oguine and Rorie each created scoring in drawing fouls (Oguine), and aggressive drives/dunks (Rorie's dunks).

DeCuire has to be relieved, knowing he has a team that can win, even when they are not hitting 3's. So many mid major and small conference teams live and die by the 3, not this GRIZ team. The dunks by Rorie, Oguine, and Akoh were impressive. This team has the talent to show well against the likes of Arizona and Creighton.

They can only better. I have ZERO doubt, the SR's will never let up. They wiill absolutely bury teams when they are hitting the 3's. Keep in mind, the likes of Dorsey, Manuel, Anderson, and Kramer can only get better, as they gain experience and get the rust off. Dorsey and Manuel are likely to emerge as great 3 pt shooters (at worse high 30% rate from 3). Falls is a 40% 3 pt shooter too. Oguine, Rorie, and Moorehead are all capable of being consistent from 3 as well.

As for FT shooting, every year under DeCuire, his teams have struggled from the FT line until conference play, and were pretty good (solid at worse) as the season progressed. Like GJ, I am not concerned about the FT struggles. I will definitely watch the replay when the conference gets the game up online. I hope that is soon. Great W, GRIZ!!!! #seniorleadership

To shoot as poorly as they did (overall as a team) and to miss as many free throws as they did....yet still win by 7 against a NCAA tourney team with 4 starters back says a lot about what this Griz team can do. Watch out!

I know they spend a lot of time working on defense in practice. In early practices the team ONLY worked on defense and there wasn't even a basketball in the gym. This team needs some shoot around work 1 guy on a basket with a rebounder and let em take some shots. They just played one hell of an athletic good basketball team that also plays darn good defense. They rotate faster than we do and are longer in the front court and the back court. Getting a good clean shot off is not easy against that team. The Griz attacked the basket and were very aggressive that is why they shot so many missed free throws in the first place. Great first game when they will start hitting some shots watch out!

...don't think the griz ever got comfortable...
...when coach gets the right rotations...
...really going to be fun to watch...

... :coffee: ...

Totally agree with the folks who mentioned that it seems like they just need to get comfortable. Being at the game and watching them shoot around before each half...these guys can shoot. I think it'll start translating to the court soon.

Watching Kendall Manuel warming up before the second half, he hit about 4 or 5 threes in a row in rhythm from about 3 different spots on the floor.

I'll also add, the last 9 or so minutes of the game, free throw shooting was MUCH better. I think Moorhead, Rorie, Oguine and Akoh had maybe 1 or 2 misses. Once TDC finds the best combos....ohhhh boy.

Lastly I'll add, during the second half may be the loudest I've heard Dahlberg at a non Griz cat game since the Griz beat Stanford early in the season when Stanford was ranked 17th in the country. May have been around 2005 or so. It was ELECTRIC, especially when Rorie dunked on Simmons, then immediately on the defensive end Oguine blocked a dunk attempt at the rim. The few TV snippets I saw, didn't really do any justice to how loud the crowd a actually was, especially during the 2nd half.

I agree with you. I was there with my boy and they just seemed tight. First game jitters. For all of you who have been hard on Bobby, I get it, he missed his shots. But, as Mariner said with Kendell, Bobby was also draining threes in the warmups. Second half warmup he hit at least 5 in a row. These issues are in their head and I think they get them sorted out. He is so good defensively he has to be in the game.

Other things I noticed, someone said that we left about 10 points off the board with missed free throws. That's true, but we also left at least 10 off the board with missed layups that we should have converted. Timmy had a clear shot in the first half that he normally would have made but added too much to it. I believe it was because it was one of their first good looks of that half.

Georgia State's defense was top-notch and we still wound up with 81 points on them. They were an excellent rebounding team. There were some boards that Mike normally would get and the GS players simply out-jumped him. That speaks volumes as we know exactly what kind of leaper Mike is. Those guys could get up! While I'm thinking about it, it was also frustrating because our boys simply didn't block out like they should have, especially in the first half and that lead to a LOT of put-backs by the GS players. They need to understand that it will be easier to get those rebounds if they maintain position. As GS proved, they aren't going to be able to out-leap everyone all the time.

It was a great game, especially down the stretch. The student section was great but should be rowdy the whole game, not just down the half. The rest of the stadium follows their lead and they need to be raucous the whole game! It was really fun to be there for the opener this year! Go Griz!
