Gavin DeJong

Fritz reported that Gavin DeJong signed with UM, with what I'm assuming is a preferred walk-on. He was injured for his entire senior year, but he's really athletic. Was apparently previously committed to MSU.

6'6 and 215…I believe he primarily plays in the post. I had heard he tested out with a 35" vertical after he broke his leg, pretty impressive.

His brother was a preferred walk-on with MSU football several years ago.

Sounds like a great get, especially if a preferred walk on. Who knows for sure or not? It is very possible we will have an extra scholarship or 2 to use than expected. :thumb:

Update, indeed he is a walk on. Great job coaches and welcome to GRIZ NATION Gavin. http://missoulian.com/sports/college/montana/mens-basketball/manhattan-product-dejong-commits-to-montana-in-men-s-hoops/article_ce3e8f96-cb49-11e3-a6c1-0019bb2963f4.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Interesting that both this recruit, and the former Cat recruit from Colorado have been quoted as saying the new head coach at MSU, Fish did not give them any consideration upon taking over the job.....rarely even courtesy calls. Not a good way to start his career in Bozeman.

DeJong....

“I committed to the Cats in January with Brad Huse, and then he lost his job,” DeJong said Wednesday. “The new coach (Brian Fish) didn’t really contact me, so I started talking to the Griz. They offered me what they called a recruited walk-on spot.

Nehme...

"It was my decision to get released," said Nehme, The Gazette's 5A-4A boys' basketball Player of the Year after averaging 27.1 points. "I didn't feel wanted anymore, and the coach (Fish) rarely called me. So it just wasn't a good fit anymore."

The Colorado kid is a pretty good scorer. I hope we do add him. I'd rather we add the kid from England though at 6'10". :thumb:

35" vertical with a broken leg is something. I wonder what he could do after he healed up.

Ugh…I meant after he had healed up. Nice catch though!

The 10p news out of Bozeman last night showed clips of Gavin DeJong. What impressed me was he played above the rim. Great hops and athleticism from the kid from Manhattan. Should end up being a good get.
