Gameday Weather Update

Updated NWS forecast...

Friday night: -4
Saturday: Mostly sunny and 6

By the time it gets here the high will probably be below 0 at this rate, it was 14 a couple days ago.
 
“I think the No. 1 thing is just an understanding of what the cold really means,” [Head Coach Joe] Moglia said Tuesday during practice. “It is not possible for the human body to acclimate to serious freezing temperatures when you’re used to 45 or 50 degrees. So we’re going to need to make sure our guys understand … this is about the prevention of heat loss. So what kind of clothes are we going to wear, how we wear them, how we might protect our skin, how to stay reasonably warm on the sideline, the use of heaters, chicken soup at halftime, things like that.”
 
Reading the lead in Greg Rachac’s “Coastal Carolina: Who to watch” story (see below) makes me think he’s been reading eGriz!

At this point - high of 6 degrees, I'm not sure this is an advantage anymore. I think 20 would have been better. Playing football in zero degree weather sucks for everyone. At 20 degrees it would have been comfortable for our guys and not theirs. Also, weather this cold is going to have a dramatic impact on attendance and noise level.
 
I think we better have our run game dialed in Saturday. I would be freezing footballs and practicing the QB / RB exchange. I just thing a QB hands are going to get cold and have a hard time throwing a decent ball.

Guaranteed there are going to be some footballs on the ground Saturday, I hope most of them bounce our way.

Another obscure reference (which Moglia might possibly remember), which I'll summarize for you younger folks.

The reference could be to the "Chicken Soup Game," actually the 1979 Cotton bowl, played in a brutally cold winter storm. Notre Dame QB Joe Montana, who had the flu, fought hypothermia in the first half and was nixed to come out for the second. So they covered him with blankets and fed him chicken "soup" -- chicken bouillon cubes in the hottest water he could handle. By the middle of the 4th quarter, Houston led by 34-12 ... then Joe came back out and led "one of the most stirring comebacks in college football history." The ball was snapped with just two seconds left on the clock and Joe threw the TD pass that tied the game. The PAT gave Notre Dame the win, 35-34.

(Many years later, we bought the DVD of this game, BTW. We sometimes watch it when there's no football worth watching on TV. :) )
