Game thread

That is a tough way to lose a damn game, but they should never have dug that hole for themselves by letting PSU out hustle them for 3/4 of the game. I hope they learned a little lesson tonight. That was a horrible call but the refs didn't cost them the game. :twocents:

Stuart Mayes should start for this team. The defense improves significantly when he is on the floor. Starting 2 small guards hurts us on defense. Stu goes inside, defends and gets rebounds. The call against Hasquet at the end was beyond awful. I don't think I have complained about refs this year but this crew sucked. The charging call on Mayes during a fast break in the first half was almost as bad as the call against Hasquet. Of course, if the Griz don't craft a huge hole at the start, then the crappy refs don't help determine the outcome. Tough loss. I'm not sure this team is ever going to find the consistency that could carry it to a tournament win.

I wouldn't give up on them this early, we are half way through the conference. There will be many suyrprises along the way. Weber is in the drivers seat today, but 2 weeks ago some on here had already crowned ISU and we all saw what happenned to them. The thing to keep in mind when the tournament comes, the Griz have been there and done that twice, experience is huge that time of year. Let's hope they learned a lesson about playing 40 minutes tonight.

I could not agree more. You pretty much agree with my other post regarding Mayes and the officiating.

I've never been a big fan of blaming the refs for a loss and I certainly don't blame them for tonight's disaster - the griz took care of that themselves with a lazy first half, and another display of how NOT to play help defense.

But does anyone else feel the officiating in BSC games this year has been terrible? I think for the most part, the griz have gotten the better end of the deal in past games, but not tonight. It just seems that they have no consistency and no control night after night. There's been several nights that I walked out of Dahlberg feeling sorry for the other team

I heard one guy comment that some "woman" in charge of BSC officials has done a horrible job of putting together this year's crews - resulting in a lot of guys that shouldn't be officiating at this level working the Big Sky.

I'm not sure how accurate that is, but I've seen enough this year to believe we must have a lot of substandard officials -- there's just been to many bad nights to chalk it up to good officials having off nights. :twocents:

The quality of BSC officials has slipped a little. A few of the better ones started working PAC 10 and other bigger conferences. Believe it or not, there are some refs who started in the BSC and have gone on to work NCAA Championship games, the most recent being Scott Thornley, who was a pretty decent BSC ref. I don't know why anyone would want to be a ref.

I would say that overall that the BSC officials are not doing such a good job this year. I don't know about you, but when I purchase my season tickets for the year I want to go and watch basketball. Not watch the refs call fouls all night. There are so many instances of where a foul is called by BSC refs and it should have been a no-call. It totally takes the game away from these contests. I don't know how many times I've seen silly little hand check fouls called where the offense has the ball up top and the defender goes up to pressure to start the five second count.

Sucks to hear that there were bad calls at the end of this game. As a fan you want to come away from a game (win or lose) saying "wow, what a game, that big steal/block/shot was huge in the outcome of the game." What we usually hear now is "suspect calls at the end by the refs, game decided at the free throw line."

:-(

Exactly, in a well officiated game there should be no mention of the referees. A win is a win but a PSU fan must wish it came under better circumstances. I was really hoping this game would go to OT, a game should never be won at the line.
