Game thread

I was watching a playoff game a couple nights ago and the team which I think was an all black university had the biggest pants I've ever seen. LOL It seems like they just keep getting bigger every year. They are going to be tripping on their pant legs soon.

Next thing you know...they'll be pulling their shorts down to just where their jersey ends....so that when their jersey flies up...we can see their underwear. Oh wait....it'll be their butt sticking out of their jock strap.

SWEEEP!!! 6-0 versus the Eagles in the last 2 years!!!

A couple of really bad calls down the stretch didn't hurt ya, either!

Yeah, it was all in the officiating. Believe whatever you want.

I didn't say it was all in the officiating, did I? But that foul that was called on Stuckey in the last 30 seconds was huge. That was a little tickey-tack foul that was not being called all damn game long. How on earth are they going to make that call when the game is on the line when they haven't called that sort of foul all game long?
That, and the blatant travel on Criswell, the uncalled goal-tend...and Virg not being ejected kind of makes one raise their eyebrows a little.

Again, good game. You guys won it. But please don't tell me that the officiating had nothing to do with you eeking out that win.

I listened to the radio so I hesitate to comment, but according to Mick on the radio, and making a point of it in the post game interviews, Criswell apparently got hammered at the end of regulation when Stuckey made his steal, with no call, so his insinuation is the only reason it got to OT was the refs, as Montana should have had a 2 point lead and the ball at the end of regulation. Also he said at the end of regulation, when Eastern had to foul, Criswell was thrown to the floor but no intentional foul despite calling it on Mathews, which of course would have iced the game for Montana.

I didn't see it, but it sounds like maybe both teams had room to bitch, as usual in the BSC. The Griz dodged a huge bullet tonight, though. I thought for sure Mathews had given the game away with that dumb foul.

Stuckey will get his chances to go to the dance. His level of play is good for the Eagles, but also good for the whole conference - it makes everyone play better and brings some national recognition to the BSC. I just hope when he goes NBA he gets drafted by the Sonics! It will be fun to watch him the next 3 years, I hope he gets the crowd support (at home and on the road) he deserves.

In any close game there is ALWAYS a few calls that COULD go either way and that WOULD have made a difference IF they had been called the OTHER way. Fans generally see the calls the way they WANT to see them.

You say the call on Stucky was tickey-tack, but if it had been the other way, and somebody reached in on Stucky, you would have been calling for the foul. You say Criswell traveled, but it sure looked like Criswell was hacked before the travel. And don't start with goal-tending since Eastern got away with one earlier in the game. Maybe you missed that?

Fact is, Eastern was in the bonus well before Montana, so your argument about officiating is pretty weak. When a team loses, its easy to blame the officiating. I know Seahawk fans who still blame the Super Bowl loss on officiating. Yeah right, that's almost as bad as the MANY Bobcat fans who blamed their 21 point 2nd half collapse against EWU two years ago on officiating. The EWU o-line was holding all game long...

Griz got lucky tonight. Why didn't Martin play more? He was hot in the first half, and didn't see the floor in the 2nd half ..... BS!!!!!!!!!

On nights like this, Coach K HAS to put him in there!!! Short memory.... Do you remember who CARRIED this team last year through the BSC tourney!!!

Virgil Matthews?

yah i agree with playing martin, in the post game Larry said something about some guys taking bad shots in the second half checking to see if they were on fire, matt was 1-3 in the second half, not sure if he was talkin about him or not.

matt definately helped carry this team last year in the tourney and he sealed the deal with 2 huge Ft's in the finals

Virgil has been downright awful for the last half the year. He has killed them with his play today.
I disagree. Virgil has not been as consistent during the 2nd half but hardly downright awful. Tonight he has 11 points (including 2 critical fts in OT) and 6 rebounds. He also is a helluva defender and frequently draws the the opponents best offensive player. I like Matt but you can hardly put him on a guy like Stuckey. Also, although he didn't play much, I really like the job Mayes did on Stuckey. He gave him fits. Unrelated but worth mentioing, I thought the EWU radio guy who did the audio on the webcast was really good! :thumb:

Ok, just got back from both games and dinner.

First off, I gotta say that I'm a little suprised to see EWU fans complaining about the officiating in this game. This was quite possibly one of the most lopsided called games I've seen in a long time. Montana was into the bonus early in both halves, while EWU only had 5 fouls the entire 2nd half.

There were so many blocks in the backcourt that EWU didn't get called for. There were so many fouls called against UM, but identical fouls not called against EWU. I know I'm biased, but my impression was that this game was called completely against Montana in an almost unfair fashion. NAU fans around us commented the same exact way. They said that if it wasn't for the officials, the game would have been over with 5 minutes left. Their words...not mine.

And you should all be ashamed of bad-mouthing such a hard working, good kid like Virgil Matthews. That was not an intentional foul, nor was it a dirty play. He went up and made an attempt at the ball, but made sure that Stuckey was not going to make the layup. It was a hard foul, but it was not a dirty play and it did not warrant an intentional foul call. The refs almost handed the game to EWU with that one call. Stuckey was fine after that - it is the time of the year to recognize good actors.

Just let me harp on this point. Virgil's foul was not worthy of an intentional foul. He had one arm up going for the ball, his momentum took Rodney to the ground.

It was especially bad after missing two missed fouls on Criswell right before that. I don't think they were necessarily fouls, but they were calling them whenever Stuckey took the ball to the hole. Penoncello had the same exact thing happen to him the play before and it was a foul. So how it wasn't a foul for Criswell - well that's beyond me.

PS - One of the refs was "Bill Clinton" (most will know who I'm talking about), and the other is the thin-skinned ref who called the technicals against Krysko and Bone in the PSU game in Missoula. Both of those guys didn't make one call for Montana, and I think its pretty obvious that they aren't too fond of Larry.

I think that fairness and justice played out in this one. The refs were so bad, the basketball gods couldn't let Stuckey's shot at the buzzer fall. It would have let the officials decide the game (like they were trying to do pretty much the entire game).

By the way, this is a little off topic, but Sacramento really got hosed during their game against NAU. It might have been worse in that game than ours. The foul count was 8 - 1 with 12 minutes left in the first half!

Fortunately, Montana was able to overcome all the adversity and pull this one out. The refs just about took the game away. The crowd was staunchly against Montana. They were louder rooting against Montana than they were cheering for NAU. My theory about NAU's classless fans was confirmed tonight. They specifically chanted at the Montana fans tonight, and then proceeded to do the same thing at the Sacramento fans. I mean, c'mon. You can root against the other team, but the other teams' fans??? That's just ridiculous. But Montana overcame a lot of obstacles tonight and really pulled out a great win.

One more!!! :thumb:

Thanks for the reports from the people on the scene. One game at a time. Going to be interesting to see what happens next. Nice to have two good teams in the final.

Oral Roberts and University of Wisconson Milwaukee both won their tournaments last night March 7th. I hope we play like we played those two games.
