so-called "insurmountable" problems can actually get solved when there's the will to solve it.

Remember all the discussion here on eGriz, and on various sports web sites, about how football schedules are so locked in that that you really can't change things. How about this:

Charleston Southern, Indiana schedule game for Oct. 7
When Charleston Southern's game at South Carolina State, scheduled for Sept. 9, was canceled due to the threat of Hurricane Irma, it seemed like the Buccaneers would have a pair of bye weeks.

Instead, they've replaced that lost chance with a much bigger challenge.

The 16th-ranked Bucs have added a game with Indiana to their slate on Oct. 7, which was a mutual bye week. The Hoosiers were scheduled to play Florida International this weekend in Bloomington, but the Panthers had to cancel with much of their athletic department still in Alabama after moving operations there prior to Irma's impact.
...

Sure they (both) got lucky ... but someone who wanted something to happen had to spot the opportunity and then go do something about it. Not everyone has the gumption to do that.

Just got to looking at the respective schedules ... and this Charleston Southern - Indiana game has all the earmarks of a possible "trap" situation.

On Oct 30, Indiana plays at #5 Penn State (Ouch, PSU looks really good this year!). Then, on Oct 14, they get Michigan (currently #7) at home. Meanwhile, CS gets to play Mississippi Valley State (a really bad FCS team) at home on Sept 30 ... and on Oct 14 they play at Presbyterian College (another weak FCS team).

The Indiana coaches will have a monumental job to get their team ready for the (hopefully) breather between two crushers. Conversely, Chas So can (if they want to) point for a program-pumping upset.

Like I say ... an upset waiting to happen. :)

In 2013 a CU Buff game was cancelled due to flooding in Boulder. The cancelled game was replaced by a game with Charleston Southern. The Buffs admin simply systematically looked for teams with a date that would work, then offered Charleston Southern enough money (and I recall it was a lot of money for an FCS team) to make it happen. The ironic thing is that the Buffs were looking to ensure 6 wins for to qualify for a bowl game and that proved to be a pipe dream.

Good insight.

It would be interesting to know who took the initiative in the CS-Indiana case. One would assume it would have been Indiana, since they have the leverage ($$$). But the Big Ten does not encourage FCS games, so that injects a bit of doubt. Irrelevant to the point anyway, IMO, because they did make it happen ... and that's supposed to be so very difficult.

Very difficult may be code for 'cost's a lot of money'. I recall CS was paid on the order of $650,000, plus CU provided the plane and the hotel rooms. CU was very motivated to get a winnable game.

Charleston Southern is not going to win in Bloomington. From what I have seen, they would not win in Missoula, either.

Thought this was going to be a Goodfellas themed post. This season just keeps getting more disappointing.
