I have seen a lot of freshmen over the years but relatively few have had an impact in their first year. This year appears to be different - which indicates improved recruiting.
Given that I only played high school hoops and don't claim to know much about the game:
1. Billy Reader could be a special post player. He has soft hands, long arms, is very mobile, and plays with purpose.
2. I really liked Jordan Gregory in the early games. He seemed to have confidence and moved well at the guard position. I don't know why he didn't get in the Long Beach game.
3. In the last road trip, Keron Deshields got some minutes. He actually played quite a bit in the Long Beach game and I think he was even on the court for the last few minutes (where the game was won). I didn't have any expectations for him given that he was such a late recruit last summer. He doesn't look like a freshman out there - he wasn't intimidated by the Long Beach guards (who are excellent players). He didn't hesitate to take the 3 from the corner.
4. I am waiting to see Michael Weisner show the shooting skills that he has.
Would some of you who actually know the game comment on where these guys have strengths and weaknesses? I think it will be fun to watch them improve.
I don't ever remember the Grizzlies having 4 quality freshmen getting minutes. Could be a special group.
