This is what I hear from people from Washington. Staudacher, never made it to Missoula for classes. He came up, for orientation this summer, went home and decided Missoula was not the place for him. He called Larry and asked for a releace and was given a full reliece. Rumor has it that a couple WAC schools are looking at him but not a lot of scholarships are open right now. There are also some football schools that are interested in him. I hear that if he wants school paid for he will most likely go the JC route for one year.

From the Missoula side I have heard that he had a chance to play against some of the Griz players (returners and recruits) and came to the conclusion that it was a redshirt had his name on it, and decided to look else where.

If what Mslacat says is true, he sounds like a kid you don't want on your team anyways. I don't care who you are, no one should come to campus thinking they should just be given a spot without earning it. Sounds to me like he did you all a favor and saved you from another Justin Hartman-like episode.

Just for the record the part I said was from the "Missoula Side" was speculation from someone who saw him play this summer. He actually thought Ryan was a pretty nice kid. In my opinion Ryan was the weakest of UM great recruiting class. His rep was as the second best shooter in Washington (second to a guy who will be playing for a NBA club next year) and a hard working "winner". If the Kid does want/need playing time, maybe the JC route will be best after all. He just choose rather late.

Mslacat-Any idea on how the Griz will fill the open scholarship left by Staudacher???

At this late date, I might look at a transfer player, but most likely just add his scholarship to be recruited for next year.

Another thought might to offer to a walk-on (sorry I don't know your walk-ons that well) who might be deserving. The down side to that is that it is a gamble. If it looks like the guy might not be all that great by season end you are looking at pulling a scholarship and then you have to deal with the down side of that.

Third thought. Highly unlikely, buuuut. McGillis signed after the the late L.O.I. period as such I do not think he is contractually commited to O.S.U. until he attends his first class.

Thats the downside of this whole problem. McGillis was not offered because Ryan (and Swift) was already signed. If Ryan had made his descision earlier I would bet big money, McGillis would be a Griz today.

Mslact,

My Washington sources on Ryan Staudacher, say Montana not being the right "fit" was more on academic, social and ethical reasons than a basketball reason "fit". I also heard that the Montana coaches were not happy about his leaving as they thought Ryan would be getting a lot of playing time due to his shooting ability.

Your Montana sources conjecture would not line up with this..why would the kid be looking at Pac 10 and Wac schools if he wanted playing time right away. I think Montana folks will see him in a few years shooting in the big dance, a testimony to Krysko's eye for talent.

Your are right on Montana's great recruiting class this year though, Has anyone seen the big 6'10 kid VanValiet or Swift play yet in any pick up games..what is your take on the big kid that missed his senior year?

bozone-I don't think your assessment here is fair at all! Read what you said and I think you may agree that you really jumped to some unfair conclusions regarding Ryan. From what I understand, he is a quality young man and is extremely unlikely to have been expecting "a spot without earning it" or engage in a "Justin Hartman-like episode." I don't see how any of the other posts in this thread could have led you to those conclusions. :-?

For whatever reason, Ryan did not decide to come to Missoula. I heard he is looking to walk on at UW next year. Also got the same thing as MslaCat said. He found out he was coming into a redshirt role and figured he could do the same thing for a Pac-10 school at the very least.

I think you may have misinterpreted the "tone" of my post - I wasn't meaning it as smack towards the griz or as a blanket disparagement of a kid I have never met. I got the impression from Mslacat's post (which he qualified as secondhand hearsay) that Staudacher came to campus and, after playing some pick-up with the team, came to the conclusion that he didn't want to sit through a redshirt year. Now, I am drawing my own conclusions here, but I don't know of many kids who come to college assuming that they will play immediately - and if so, maybe they aren't really ready maturity-wise anyways.

I guess the gist of my post was to say that I think the griz will be fine without him because you have enough talent regardless - and in the process, you may have avoided an ugly situation down the road.

Pretty sure McGillis isn't gonna come back to play for the Griz after they screwed him in the first place. The kid probably just didn't like Krysco...can't blame him.
