One example of Power 5 Athletic Department Foundation control:

I understand foundations of college athletic departments generally. They are non-profits that raise money UM has a foundation. What, if anything, is different about this Georgia foundation?

Read the second paragraph of the above link from the Flagpole. Then read the following link in it's entirety:

https://www.redandblack.com/uganews/football-revenue-bolsters-athletics-academics/article_706019cc-01dd-11e6-8b16-0ba043051140.html

Less than five percent of virtually every Power 5 school and a large proportion of the Group of 5 Athletic Department Funding is derived via state funding, to include activity fees, parking, etc. That is to say, and it ought to be obvious if you read the Flagship article carefully, you'll note the University President is involved with the foundation only because it is an NCAA requirement.

In the late 80s my supervising professor, a former Texas A&M player, referred to the major college football teams as semi-pro teams. It is still the case. Georgia had five defensive players drafted in the first round last year.

The second link seems to describe a normal, but very large, athletic foundation. Most of the funding seems to run through the foundation. I assume the AD works for the university, as does the president. Same for the coaches. For legal-tax-non-profit reasons, I assume the foundation can’t run the athletic program. The university and foundation would each have their own boards.

Nope. Read the second paragraph of this article once again. Ruminate upon what that says, then read in its entirety the Red and Black article. Don't just skim it. The Athletic Foundations give excess monies to the schools. In fact, a foundation by law can't show a profit; therefore, one ought to surmise that is why the NCAA financial always report virtually every Athletic Department is losing money. Governmental Accounting is a wonderful tool, don't you agree?

I stilll don’t believe flagpole. I see that the coaches are paid or partially paid by the foundation. As a 501c3, the foundation is restricted to: “ fostering national or international amateur sports competition (as long as it doesn’t provide athletic facilities or equipment)”.

I looked at the foundation IRS filing.

The university has to run athletics. The university, not the foundation, would hire the AD and the coach.

Guess why a Montana hick would opt out sitting with the in-laws:

Did you ever hunt on Taylor Rankin Smith's place?

My main Georgia football contacts are Happy Dicks, his sister and his brother-in-law (my Dartmouth buddy). We often stay with Happy when we go to Athens.

"Happy attended the University of Georgia where he played football under Vince Dooley. While remaining on the Dean's List, he was an All-SEC performer in football and received Academic All-American honors. He eventually was named to the quarter-century (1950-1975) All-University of Georgia Team. After graduation, Happy attended the Medical College of Georgia and subsequently completed a six-year residency at the University of Michigan Medical School.

Happy established the Georgia Neurological Surgery Group in Athens, Georgia. He is the University of Georgia football team physician, and he is on the university's Administrative and Athletic Boards. The university has honored him with a Perpetual Athletic Scholarship endowed in his name."

I concur, nice headline. One would assume you'll be rubbing elbows with members of the Magill Society. Better you than me. I escaped that ilk, returned to the Gallatin Valley and watched it go to hell and escaped to a place south of the 45th parallel duing summers and the midwest-Gulf in the winters.

Hope you have an opportunity to discuss their Athletic Foundation as it was a huge point of contention with my father-in-law. As a state government official, he did not feel the Athletic Department should be run by professional businessmen and women.
