Former Big Sky WR thoughts on 3-3-5

Being an armchair QB that hasn't played tackle football in about 40 years, I like to discuss my GRIZ football theories with 2 friends here in Billings, both former college football WR's, one played for an NAIA school about 10 years ago the other a former FCS Big Sky Conf. WR from about 20 years ago.

I ran into my Big Sky WR friend last night in Billings, and he we wanted to know the story on our new USC transfer QB Jake Jensen, so I told that he was a Calif. All-State QB in high school, went to BYU, left on a two-year LDS mission, played well at a Calif. JC, and then went to USC, where he was a backup, and I told him the starting QB job next year would probably between Jensen and Ah Yat.

Then he asked me how we were doing at other positions in the portal. I told him. I thought we were doing well overall except we were really struggling thus far in recruiting 1-2 big, mobile DT's--I blamed it on the 3-3-5.

He told me the 3-3-5 was developed and designed to counter the late, great Cody, Wyoming native and Texas Tech, WAZZU, and Mississippi State HC Mike Leach's Air Raid Offense, where Mike's O would typically play either 4 or 5 WR's, somewhat similar to Don Read's Air Bear offense, where Grady Bennett and Dave Dickensen were chucking the ball all over WA-GRIZ 30 to almost 40 years ago.( Cody is just 94 miles south of Billings.)

He told me against Coach Leach's Air Raid O, the 3-3-5 could be very effective in stopping or at least slowing down the Air Raid if a defense had good, fast defenders. He also told me against a run-first, more balanced offense, the 3-3-5 would be not very good, giving up plenty of points to getting completely shredded if the other team had some decent to good talent on it's offense, including a big, strong, mobile O line--he specifically mentioned the " Kitties" this year and NDSU vs. us two years ago in our playoff game in Fargo, when we got run over in the second half, even with Gubner @ nose and Hill, O'Connell and Weinell @ LB.

I had not ever thought or boned up on what the 3-3-5 was supposed to be good @ defending, but what he told me made sense--if we faced an Air-Raid team, I suppose a 3-3-5 or what my other friend said his NAIA school would do when facing 4 or 5 wide, dropping a LB from your base 4-3-4 and " playing nickel," a 4-2-5, could make sense. ( I still don't like the 3-3-5 !!! )
