For Football Junkies: FBS Games All Day

Those of us who have Friday off have had a great day (being retired/self-employed is a wonderful thing). No overtime FBS games, but some pretty damn good ones. And some were close, even though they did not look like that for awhile. And scoring ... not too shabby. How about Texas Tech at Texas? 48-45 with over 1,100 yards of offense. Same with Oregon-Oregon State: 52-42, with (again) over 1,100 yards of offense.

None of the other games were quite this amazing, but it's been fun. Unfortunately, Toledo (ranked #24) lost, so they won't be ranked to mess with the big boys' funky playoff system. (would have liked to see that).

Two more big ones to go this evening.

I watched quite a bit of the Washington/Washington State game -- UW has the top defense in the Pac 12 and looked sharp on offense today. The Griz might have a tall task when they visit Husky Stadium in 2017; UW has 52 freshmen on the roster, including true freshmen at QB, Tailback and two burner wide receivers. Granted WSU was missing their starting QB today, but the UW defense was tough, flew around the field and made some really hard hits.

Washington State, without its starting QB, performed like our Griz in overtime under Simis. Fumble, fumble, fumble. Not to mention the pick six's(I saw three). Played like a true freshman.

And Navy lost too, kicking them out of the New Year's Day celebration too...
Yeah, that was a bummer too.

Here's something weird: If we heard it correctly, UMass is not happy in the Mid-Atlantic (where they just went 2-6, 3-9), so they plan to go independent. Note ... no return to FCS, even though they have not yet been competitive in FBS (having won just 8 games in four years at that level). Talk about being in denial!

The obvious move-up implications are obvious. Personally, I'm mostly a fence-sitter, with a preference for FCS -- but then I think a lot of teams that pretend to be FBS should return to FCS.
