darts said:THE END OF UM DOMINANCE IN FB?
The stats/opinions you site, Lou Holtz, etc. are correct when everyone is on more or less an even playing field- facilities, fans, tradition etc.
However, unless, Wash/Griz stadium is leveled and the Griz go back to a Dornblaser-like facility, the UM will remain dominant in football. Recruits go for facilities and a winning tradition. Now, it is true, that the days of KIng Kong stomping on the mere mortals may be at least becoming more competitive. If UM suffers through a couple of 7-4 seasons the domination will, of course, wane a little bit. But, I don't see it ending unless a Dennis Washington/T. Boone Pickens level donor steps up at a BSC competitor. MSU just had Jake Jabs step up for $25 million for a new Business School. You might have reason for serious worry if Jake were a football fan. HA-ha.
MSU now has facilities that good prospects can at least consider as being in the same league as UM's, although the MSU stadium is entirely less impressive. Granted, as long as Waded Cruzado remains MSU president they will continue to complete their stadium, and, perhaps that is rival to fear. But, even completed, MSU's stadium will likely not be any better than UM's. PSU has a better venue. EWU is getting better. And, those 2 places will always bring in players because of urban proximity and the ability to take non-qualifying freshman, ie, Taiwan Jones. Cal Poly has a nice venue but academic standards (like UCDavis) that won't allow wide recruitment. SacSt is improving and maybe in 5 years will be a contender for top recruits. But as I see it, no other Big Sky school will be able to close the facilities gap any time soon.
I would argue that UM has the biggest home field advantage in all sports of any kind. Anywhere. Look at the attendance records. The plan of the stadium is such, with a mere 15 feet from sideline to stadium wall, that the home field advantage is certainly more extreme than ANY football facility in the USA. The opposition spends the first quarter marveling at how cool the environment is and the fourth trying to learn hand signals that they have never before had to use because of the incredible noise. And that will continue. Additionally, other facilities cannot try to recreate this sort of ear-splitting environment. The NCAA has now ruled that any football stadium plan must allow at least 25 feet to the closest wall before construction can begin. I know that sounds trivial and specific, but, it isn't. The unique UM facility, corresponding winning and, in turn, perpetual recruitment of top players is not going stop.
Yes, the current state of affairs is a bump in the road- well, maybe, a crater-sized pot hole. Yet, the tools needed for top level recruiting remain in place. MSU had former players involved in murder and drug felonies and a coach sent to prison for meth amphetamine sale. 6 years later this information has zero effect on prospective recruits and their parents.
Good post, thank you.
