Football dead?, Basketball Now King, Griz dominate Stanford

The environment was great, over 6,900 fans enjoying the best performance by a Griz BB team since Jud Heathcotes 1975 team in the game against UCLA. But this time the Griz won. This game was certainly around 50 times more exciting than any of the football games played this year. If Griz continue playing like this every game like today, there won't be any need for tailgating to entertain the crowd.

Never seen a better coached team here. Fundamentals, team play, it was all there. Griz have been shooting over 50% every game (except maybe the Boise Game). At first, I figure, these guys will eventually cool off as the season goes. Still can, but I am quite confident they will maintain this shooting touch. These coaches of ours are teaching these guys right. Not one of the players is really super defensively (except Matthews is pretty close to it), but as a team, they played good defense today. Actually, I have change that to excellent team defense today.

Yes I am very excited. Stanford was just plain dominated today. Stanford may have been better athletes, but the Griz just plain out hustled them so much that almost all the loose balls bounced right to a Griz.

I am sure the crowd energized the players quite a bit here. And that is the way it should be. This team is good and deserves the fan support like today's game.

Now, Stanford now, they are talented and all that. But, they kind of reminded me of the Lady Griz. Good team but no inner city black point guard.

Contrast that to the Griz, Virgil Matthews had his best game as a Griz, played like that inner city black point guard and scored 23 points, 8 assists, 3 steals, and 7 rebounds and one hell of a blocked shot that prevented a Stanford player from scoring a layup. He played like an all-american.

Jordan Hasquet, in only his second start of the year, couldn't miss from 3 point line. Hit 4 of 4 from 3 pt line, 6 - 7 from the field all together, plus 4 - 4 from 3 pt line, and 20 points total.

Griz had all five starters score in double figures. Martin had 12 points, Criswell had 14 points, and Strait had 11 points.

Griz shot 58.3% from the field. Raised there average for the season above 53 to 54%.
Griz also hit 24 - 28 from free-throw line, and turned the ball over 14 times total.

Stanford on the other hand, only shot 42% from the field and just plain sucked at the freethrow line making only 11 - 21 free throws.
Stanford did not look like a team that would be ranked above 50 at this time. This loss to the Griz, and to a team from a conference that was ranked only about 29th out of 32 may haunt them at the end of the season when it comes time for tournament selection.

But, this win by the Griz, plus Portland State's narrow loss to Gonzaga ( a top 10 ) team, may just have gained some respect for the Big Sky Conference.

But, most importantly, this win over a quality team (though may not be as good as many poll voters thought when they voted Stanford number 13 in pre-season) will energize fan support. I expect better attendance figures from now on than what they would have been if they lost.

It was exciting to watch today's game. Much more so, than any of the football games this past season. Plus, it was nice to see the Griz do everything needed to win this game. Great performance. Just can't stop saying it, Great performance Griz, Great Performance Griz, ......

The best part was hoe the team responded. Every time Standford would begin to chip at the lead, the Griz would answer. Hasquet was amazing. Virgil was just so clutch... great all around.

There is a direct correlation between shooting percentage and shot selection. The Griz were very patient and unselfish tonight, it will pay dividends down the road. Krysko does it the right way.......rebound, defend and share the ball. Nice work.

What a huge win for the Griz, hopefully this will build some momentum for the program this year. There is so much potential for Griz Basketball to be the premier sport in Missoula again. Would you rather watch the Griz absolutely take apart a nationally recognized team like Stanford or watch football blow out Fort Lewis State? Congrats to Coach K and the team, sounded like an amazing performance.

Personally........I'd like to watch both and don't see why others can't do the same.

Because the Griz basketballers took on a program with national prominance was a big reason for the near capacity crowd and the return of the Student factor. Unlike football UM BEAT SOMEBODY OF CONSEQUENCE! To dwell on the students, they absolutely packed both ends of the arena and the total decibel level was unreal. They were really into it.

Good analysis True Griz. This team plays very well together and showed a lot of poise when Stanford threatened to attack that single digit lead and make a serious run. The Griz absolutely owned the offensive paint all of the first half until the Cardinal wide bodies started asserting themselves. Key was the fact that UM didn't wilt under the pressure of a very good Stanford team.

Agreed, Virgil Matthews is the man when it comes to the primary leadership role, but everybody contributed and there doesn't seem to be a selfish player in the group. Saw Kamaar there in civies....This game truly had more electricity than any of the past season football games. Coach K is the real deal doing an outstanding job with very good, if not quite excellent, talent.

this is awesome!

winning games like this help the kids "buy into" what the coach teaches.

wow!
i'll say it again.
WOW!

great job guys!

I wonder if Krysko would be interested in being a football OC just to keep him warm during the off season.

Why do you have to reduce this all to the black inner city point guard garbage you always spew? That is truly offensive.

Matt Martin our whitie from South Dakota is the point guard anyways. Virgil is a 2. I love Virgil and all, but why even bring that kind of thing up?

What an incredible game to attend! We usually just go to the Lady Griz games, but we're thinking we'll add Mens' after last night. Just plain fun!!

Second!

Montana over Stanford? Wow... just wow.

That, for sure, is the sign of good things on the horizon for Griz hoops.

Heck ... they hung tough against UW in the tourney last year.

Wow.

I was there with my 18 year old son. I was able to say to him, this is what the atmosphere here used to be like all the time. Glad he was able to experience it, and hope it keeps up.

Yeah right, tell me that after Tuesday when the crowd shrinks back to 3000. Great win for the boys. By the way True got your football tickets for sale? There are fans in need and since football is dead to you, yours must be for sale?

sorry, but this is something that TheCityGriz spews out, I guess I just had to bring it up after thinking about his complaints of Selvig not able to recruit a black inner city point guard. Sorry you think it offensive but it wasn't meant to be.

But, Virgil does play point guard. He also plays the 2, and the 3. Matt Martin certainly didn't play all 40 minutes, and the other Griz point guard (Ellis) that normally backs up Martin didn't even play.

a few pics from the game are up in the GrizPics section. We were cheering to much and watching the game to take to many pics!

What a great game!

Great game and stellar performance by Coach K and his Griz. BUT, we can do both, albeit we need to quit scheduling door mats like Ft Lewis State. I prefer football because it's played outdoors in the fresh air; B-ball courts are so cramped, stuffy and airless - just my humble preference. I go to a couple three each year and cheer on the Griz, but football is my life. Remember, the good Lord grants you only a limited number of Grizzly football games. Be there.
