Separate discussion topic but very relevant to my passion in seeing a review and reduction in the scholarship penalty against the UM.
At the FBS level 1 scholarship = 1 player
At the FCS level 1 scholarship = multiple players
A lot of us have paid close attention to recruiting every single year and are aware of how the UM (and just about every FCS school) handles scholarship offers. At the FCS ranks partial scholarships can be offered, allowing schools to split up scholarships and bring in more recruits.
Looking at UM's 4 scholarship loss over the next 3 years. If the Griz were an FBS team that would cost us being able to offer 4 kids annually. However being an FCS team those 4 scholarships could represent 8 to 10 (or maybe even more) kids.
And usually who gets these partial offers? Montana kids most frequently (but not exclusively). The cost to attend the UM for in-state kids is lower and being able to offer these kids partials helps them off-set the cost to attend. For the next 3 years there are now multiple kids annually that will not be able to be offered a partial scholarship to come play for the Griz.
This will impact the amount of Montana kids on the team. This will impact the quality of the team's depth. We will probably quickly notice the effects on special teams and then as the season goes on an inevitable injuries impact key players. And all of this is penalty because of NCAA violations that occurred in 2011 with two players that just about none of these kids will have ever played or even practiced with.
That's what's really driving me with wanting a reduction.
