Found this interesting. It may disappear soon.

Reporters should be elected officials? While I understand what she's trying to do, is she really making a case that we need to hold elections for all media personnel? That's about the dumbest GD idea I've ever read. No offense.

Also for the conspiracy theorists out there, I clicked on the CV link and noticed that up until this March, Ms. Pabst was the Chief Deputy in the Missoula County Attorney Office - Criminal Division.

Foley's an idiot. worst handling of a public relations crisis since Watergate.

So Watergate was a PR crisis? Hum, I thought it was much more than that.

Foley's not an idiot. He's very good and very smart.

You need to study Watergate, thats exactly what it was. The burglary by acouple of misguided bumblers was no big thing. Nixon was never connected. The whole thing fell apart with mishandeling and a cover up. Watching Foley reminded me of the whole thing. They didn't come much smarter or " good" than Chuck Colson excep thi time.

No, you need to study Watergate. It was not a PR problem. It was a serious ethical and criminal problem. Nixon was completely involved. Have you not read any articles on the subject, including the recent ones?

40 Nixon aids and associates went to jail over Watergate, and you think that was a PR problem?

Here's what Woodwood and Bernstein said recently:

""The crimes were enormous, and that's what the tapes show," Bernstein said. "But what we found is, his White House became to a remarkable extent a criminal enterprise such as we've never had in our history."

"President Richard Nixon, who was forced to resign in the wake of Watergate, was "far worse than we thought."

Thats right a PR problem. A minor crime that an executive office tried to cover up and tried to cover the cover up. Each of the 40 or so went for obstruction of justice. No doubt Nixon was part of that.

You think Florio isn't patting her self on the back now, and won't magnify her role in the future?

The parallels are amazing. Yeah this isn't a big thing just a bunch of exjocks, wanna be jocks trying to defend and cover up what would have woked out fine if they had kept their hands off of it, admited th problem early on and taken action.

What was "covered up"? What should have been "admitted"?

I want to know what was covered up? I think that phrase is recited again and again by the mindless but nothing solid is ever offered.

Gee I dunno, I suppose complaints to the Civil Rights Office, a national news cycle talking about problems in zoo town, Missoulas own Bernstein articles, a couple of federal investigations, E mails that indicate a cop (on his own) told a coach about a problem but the coach didn't tell any one else, another cop asked the president to quit stonewalling and was reprimanded by a mayor for it, the vice president for communications decide to quit communicating and was replaced, don't indicate at least a bit of spin.

Denial is not just a river in Egypt.

The Foley sideshow has a shelf life and he expended it with Williams and Max in DC, it was only a matter of time before his carnival barker, back slapping and spin doctoring ran its course here.

...his next stop could be working a VERY used car lot...

It was subtle, but in the KECI/Engstrom interview, I got the distinct feeling tha ol' Royce was thinking the Foley's "adversarial" relationship with the Press was a big part of the problem.

I can not imagine how anyone in the press would have reacted to the VP of External Relations showing up with pictures of bite marks made by a football player on a young woman's leg asking/demanding that incident they reported (and plead guilty to by the "biter") be re-reported showing that it wasn't all that bad..... Seems to me things went down hill after that. Everything Foley did was suspect (tazing incident)

hope our next PR mouthpiece has the cred and depth to gain some degree of public confidence. If we keep getting these 'suits' recycled from the political world nothing will change. Foley did not create the mess but he did little to create a process to deal with it...he was in DC and DC connected too long

Foley didn't show up with photos of bite marks. Like I've said, you are a fountain of misinformation.

IMO, there is evidence of an attempt to cover this up. They modified an "independant" investigative report to hide the fact that 1) Pflu was in fact the "gap" in reporting and 2) football players were investigated:

Editing a report to get it accurate and comply with confidentiality obligations is not a cover up. Besides, the allegations regarding the incident in question had already been publicized by the Missoulian. At some point, the police report, with names visible, was on a tv station website.

There was no obligation for Pflu to inform anyone of the matter, which the police said had ended due to lack of evidence. What if he had reported it to O'Day or whomever? What would have been done? Nothing. The woman had not complained to the university. And, this is the matter that the police have apparently now decined, twice, to pursue for lack of evidence, and for which the university panel apparently eventually ruled 7-0 in favor of the students (and against the woman).

How can there be a coverup of something that didn't occur, when the allegations have already been on the front page of the newspaper, and when the matter was eventually directly addressed by the president in his report?

That excuse may apply to them covering up the reference to "athletes" in the report but editing the report to cover up the fact that Pflu was the "gap" is the antithesis of "accurate" and has nothing to do with INTERNAL "confidentiality obligations."
