It must be nice to be in his situation and still have a job  .......what the eff.
Just by those who think ADs and football coaches are critical players. Anyone who has taken the time to familiraize themselves with his history would not. In case one forgets, one of his major accomplishments (according to him) was replacing the entire faculty in South Dakota as department chair. Folks would be bailing with or without the current mess. As Engstrom himself said he has been slowed down for the past few months by the rape crisis (but not stopped) He was hired simply to clean out the University entrenchment from King George. JOD would have been gone with or without the football crisis. Change of leadership is very accurate. Phlu was just an insignificant bystander (to royce)goatcreekgriz said:Engstrom could end up as the Joe Stalin of UM, and the right deviationists are being purged first. I think he is underestimated by many posting here.

Don't misunderstand, he will be a very succesful president. If past performance is any indicator the less than 4 million/year brought to the athletic department by donors is chump change compared to the tens of millions he brought in South Dakota.

BDizzle said:Anybody see the new article in the Missoulian about the athletic trainer claiming O'day and Gee fired him for reporting a sexual harassment complaint? Good ol Gwen Florio wrote it. The second half of the article was about the "gang rape" by the football team. I have no idea what that has to do with the rest of the article. This is my (and most other peoples) issue with Gwen. She turns every article into an article about the Griz football team.

MSU's research funding was down a bit last year. Here's what the MSU senior vp in charge of that area said in September:
"Asked if belt-tightening in Congress will hurt federal funding of research, McCoy said there have already been significant reductions in the 2011 federal budget in programs where MSU successfully competes.
“Every university in the country is concerned,” McCoy said. “There’s a lot of effort in trying to alert congressional delegations of all the states of the importance of university research … and trying to maintain it at a stable level.”

Can you think of a better reason to put a former lobbyist (still with connections) and pitbull as opposed to an academic in charge????

Foley may be a great choice for this job, but no one is going to be able to work miracles when federal funding for university research is drying up and budget cuts in these areas are coming. If Engstrom is pinning his funding hopes on increasing federal funds for research, I doubt that he's going to be able to increase it much. This area of funding will probably go down. Looking at the research spending for the past 12 months, it looks like UM's research spending is down 13%.
Engstrom may want to spend more time trying to re-build bridges with some of the important, and potentially important, donors for UM. Funding from donors is likely to be impacted for years. If the football team falters in the next several years, Engstrom is going to get much of the blame. I have no confidence that Engstrom is going to be able to re-build enough of these bridges. With some, the damage is irreparable. I continue to believe that Engstrom has undercut his ability to lead UM. We'll see how things go, but I doubt that he will survice at UM in the long run.
