Braves crush foes in Pat Weed Duals

The Daily Inter Lake

GILLETTE, Wyo. — There seems to be no stopping Flathead High School’s wrestling team.

The Braves rolled through the first day of competition at the Pat Weed Duals in Gillette, Wyo., by crushing Deer Park, Wash., 55-6, Star Valley, Wyo., 62-9, Bismark, N.D., 63-9, and Gillette 45-23.

Deer Park is currently ranked No. 1 in Washington and finished fifth at the Tri-State Tournament last weekend in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.

Flathead won Tri-State.

Star Valley won the 3A wrestling title in Wyoming a year ago while Bismark is currently the top-ranked team in North Dakota.

And Gillette, they are ranked No. 1 in Wyoming and defending state champions in their class.

“Just a total team effort,” said Flathead coach Jeff Thompson.

“The score might not show how close the duals were, but we had to battle. The mats were a battle field. The conditioning kicked in and we won a lot of matches in the third period.”

Flathead heavyweight Tyler Thomas beat a two-time state champion and nationally ranked wrestler from Gillette.

Another key match in the Gillette dual was a 160 pounds. Caleb Allen-Schmid went up against another standout wrestler.

“His goal out there was to survive, not get pinned,” Thompson said.

The Gillette wrestler won by a technical fall.

“We thought the matches would be a lot closer,” Thompson said.

“Our boys came to wrestle. We just continued to attack them, ended up on top. We’re very happy with where we are right now.

“If we win this tournament, it will be a huge accomplishment for our program.”

Flathead is back on the mats today versus Havre. The Blue Ponies posted a 3-1 dual mark on Friday. The loss was to Gillette.

WOW! That is impressive! The Pat Weede tournament isn't one for slouches either. They only have the best teams there. They started it 2-3 years after I graduated HS. So it's relatively new. Gillette is a school about the size of Flathead before their split with Glacier, and since it's Wyoming and have so much money, they have personal trainers, tryouts.. the whole thing. Very well run program. Star Valley.. I've had entirely too many encounters with those dudes.. big giant mormon team, very disciplined kids, very good. I'm surprised they were beaten so badly.. they'll be the top 3A team in Wyoming this year. This Kalispell team is the real deal, and someone should be taking notice of them. I'd like to see them compete on even more of a national level.. this Wyoming tournament is pretty good, as is this Tri-State one.. but I'd be curious to see what they do against the stronger teams in the mid-west.

When you roll the teams they have flat destroyed (Deer Park was #1 in Washington I was told this morning) this team has to be something very special.

Congrats Braves!

Talked to one of the kids dad's tonight. He said that they ended up winning this tournament in big fashion.

From the Gillette News Record:

— By JENS CARLSON, News-Record Sports Wrier

Grueling is what the Pate Weede Tournament is for grapplers.

Seven matches in two days is no easy feat.

“You have no idea,” said Gillette’s Brady Burgess. “This is always the toughest tournament.”

*
Hard-fought best describes the competition between eight of the top wrestling programs in the region.

Seven tough duals in less than 36 hours can wear down even the deepest of squads.

“These tournaments are meat grinders,” said Gillette coach Tom Seamans. “Everybody is a little fatigued.”

But, boy is it worth it.

Excitement is what the fans get in return.

Twenty-eight showdowns on four mats in one gym is well worth the price of admission.

The two-day tournament wrapped up Saturday with a team from Kalispell, Mont., taking home top honors. The Flathead Braves were the class of the two-day event.

However, the local boys didn’t go down without a fight.

The highlight of the tournament was undoubtedly the Friday night showdown between Gillette and Flathead.

If you missed it, you missed out.

Two top-ranked programs squared off. The tournament title was on the line. It was a state finals atmosphere in December.

It was the kind of dual that gets seasoned coaches excited.

“Very few duals at this stage of my career get my heart going,” admitted Seamans, after his team dropped a 45-23 decision. “Two real good teams giving it their all.

“When the kids basically run through a wall for you. ... You have to give it up for that.”

Flathead coach Jeff Thompson was equally pumped afterwards.

“What a great environment,” exclaimed Thompson, whose team is ranked 29th in the country. “Two of the best programs in the country going at it.

“I got the same butterflies in my stomach that I had when I wrestled. The emotions were very high. What a great dual.”

Seamans and Thompson know a good dual when they are in one. They have both experienced success at the highest prep levels. They are both the heads of juggernaut programs.

They both hope there is a rematch next year.

“You guys put on a good show and you guys treat us right,” said Thompson. “We definitely would come back.”

Tournament director Richard Cox already planted the seed for Flathead’s return next year.

“The tournament champion usually gets an automatic bid the following year,” said Cox. “They said they would like to consider it.”

It would be a shame if it doesn’t happen.

Not only would it be a treat for fans, but it would give the junior-laden Camels a shot at redemption. Better yet, it could pave the way for a budding rivalry.

“I’d love to see them come back,” said Gillette’s Tyler Juby. “It is so intense. You just get caught up in it.”

Grueling and hard-fought, but definitely worth it.

The Montana boys fared well:

Man, wouldn't it be great to see baseball and wrestling added to sports at UM? I think there is enough talent around to field some pretty decent squads in those sports.

There's no wrestling program in Montana except Northern.. I think it'd be wildly popular. Really, the closest program around is probably Oregon/Oregon State.. Boise State has a very good program as well. I'd love to see it come back to UM.

I think wrestling would succeed. And providing schollies for baseball could attract some talented kids as well I would think. Another sport that I don't think would garner big crowd support, but would be succesful is men's soccer. I went on a schollie out of high school for soccer before coming to Missoula, and here I played intramurals, and there is some soccer talent on campus, that is for sure.

....ahem.... did somebody just say "Phat Weed".... wrestling?

i couldda sworn somebody just said that.
