Eric Van Vliet

From Scout .com:

Big Score For Montana!
by Dave Telep of Scout.com, April 14, 2005 at 12:06pm ET

Eric Van Vliet is headed to Montana, according to a source close to the situation. The 6-foot-9, 235 pounder is a coup for the Grizzlies as numerous programs began pursuing him upon his release from Fresno State.

Among the interested parties were Minnesota, Washington State, Oregon State and Indiana.

Great get for Montana!! :o

I hope the program does not lose interest in him and take his scholarship away down the road. At any rate, I wish him the best in Missoula.

MileHigh, I am starting to hope the program loses interest in you and takes your ticket privledges away. We understand your bitter feelings towards Krysco, but to think that no other program has done this sort of thing is very naive. I am not saying that Krysco could have handled the situation better, or that he did it poorly, but the issue of taking scholarships from players is not new to college athletics.

Any information available on Eric Van Vliet? I see he is about 6-foot-9 and 235 pounds, but don't know if he will play the 3, 4, or 5.

He is a center and is listed on the net from 6-9 to 6-10. He had a great summer last year but injured his knee before the season started and sat out this last season .

Great job on overflowing one thread and ruining a perfectly good, no, an exciting thread.

Great news for the Grizzlies! I don't care if he doesn't live up to the billing right away. The size is needed terribly.

Hopefully the Griz can afford to redshirt him next year. This was a huge get for the Griz. Sounds like he was good friends with Swift and that probably played a huge role in the Griz getting him. What luck the Griz recruited Swift, then Fresno State's BB program has some...problems...and the Griz end up with some inside help getting one of their big man recruits :)

Just a comment on the scholarship thing. It is common in every college BB program is withdraw scholarships from players. To make Krysto out to be some ogre who is screwing kids out of something, is ridiculous.

These scholarships are for one year, and renewable annually. UM has asked Krysto to build a great program again here. He can't do it with Frontier-calibre players. And, he can't waste 3-4 key scholarships on kids who will never help the program. Cut him some slack. I love the job he's doing!

I agree 100% Wolfman. Now I'm going to go take a shower, as I feel dirty for agreeing with you. Ugh. Players have to earn their scholarships year after year. It's always been that way and should remain that way. If I'm correct, the coach can get fired at any time as well. :o

Wolfman, I note that both you and AZ spell Krysko's name with a "t" rather than a "k," like everyone else does. Just an observation....

:o :o I have had trouble with that all year. Krystowiak, Krystowiak, Krystowiak. I never will get it. :o :o Larry Krystowiak.

Wolfman, I was wondering if you could help me out. Can you tell me a specific example you have heard where a school has withdrew scholarships.

Barn Ball, I have NO idea how it ever became "Krysko" but that's what it was when he played here, and that's still what it is.

Milehigh, I am not in any way in support of a school pulling a schollarship. So don't think that I am in support of what happened at UM. Just giving you some facts. A couple of years ago there were two players at the University of North Carolina that had their schollarships pulled. One of them was Adam Boone who ended up transfering to U. of Minn. and Adam Morrison who ended up going to UCLA. Both ended up in better situations while we all know where North Carolina ended up. Most everything you find about the situation there was reported as just a regular transfer, but a friend of mine who was close to the program said the were both "welcome to come back" but would be without a schollarship. It happens more than we will ever know!!!

Try this "KrystKowiak, pronounced Kris-KOE-vee-ak. Hope that helps.

Actually, in the old pronunciation, I believe it's pronounced Shiskooviak. Heard that on an NBA game once, a long time ago. I'm guessing it's not pronounced that way anymore though.

:o :o Thanks for all of the pronounciation help. That is not the problem. The problem is I have to look up Krystowiak everytime I spell Krystowiak. :o :o I am not into the sheeshevkii fella so it is ok with me to call someone in Montana coach K. Crisco may be better just do not spell it or you will tie up this board with analysis. Thanks for the help.

That would be Brian Morrison. He played his high school ball in Washington, so he came back to play closer to home.
