Final 2015-16 schollie status?

I want to stress that there's NO attempt on my part to stir things up. But I've not heard any definitive statement on how the final open Griz hoops scholarship will be (or has been) assigned with the departure of Daniel Nwosu. I'm very interested in who that schollie player is/will be.

I had heard that it could be offered to 14-15 walk-on Gavin DeJong, which would be good news to me. Griz coaches have often spoken of his immense potential, and he's apparently grown somewhat since last year. He's an exceptional leaper and rebounder, but is described as coaches as a football player still learning how to play college hoops.

That said, I've noticed that there have also been signs that the Griz may still be looking for a jc player to provide balance -- I assume on the wing (3-4 positions) where the Griz were a bit thin last year.

It was interesting to hear Travis DeCuire's hints on Jim Basnight's Blogtalk online audio interview that Martin Breunig may move away from the basket more this season -- possibly handle the ball much more -- which might indicate a 4-5 alignment of Bryden Boehning at post and Fabijan Krslovic at power forward... but that even more solidly hints at the need for another frontcourt player to provide depth on the baseline.

Any insider with info? Certainly some intrigue with how TD will construct this team for the upcoming season.

We should know in June. Usually that is when scholarships are official. Then again, Travis can hold out until the school year begins, if he chooses. Part of the reasoning for Breunig expanding his game for his professional future. He is not a true 5/C. With an improved perimeter game, and ball handling he can be combo 3/SF and 4/PF professionally. He has a shot at the NBA if he can successfully add those things to his game. If not the NBA, he can make a high end European team, which being a good perimeter shooter is certainly utilized over there.

I plan to make the GRIZ team camp in a few weekends. I absolutely love the team camp. It is great to watch regional HS players. It is also a great opportunity to watch who has done what in the off season . Last summer almost the whole team was back that early in the summer. Also a great opportunity to talk with the coaches. It is by far the best of the GRIZ camps to watch as a fan.

I have heard from someone close to the program that the schollie will not go to Gavin because we only have one senior this coming year (Martin), and Travis does not want to have only one schollie to give for the following season.

I'd heard that the coaches were worried about the imbalance of recruits per class. That would explain the high number of scholarship offers made to the class of 16-17 (currently 10 listed at VC). Most of those are offers are to high profile point guards though.

I do share your excitement for Gavin. I'll think he will be a very good player.

I wonder if they coaches are looking at a possible transfer who can play immediately and would be a senior?

This in my opinion would be the ideal scenario. Has to be the right guy of course. Would love a banger, a true 5 that can play D and board to free Martin of some of those responsibilities. I really like Krslovic but the absolute lack of proven depth scares me. I'm also high on DeJong looked like a legitimate D1 athlete from the little i saw.

One other question i have is about Boehning, did he not redshirt? Verbalcommits.com has him as a sophomore with DeJong as a redshirt frosh. I'm pretty sure Dejong was the only one of the 2 to get on the court granted it was 2 minutes in the 1st game and didnt throw off his ability to redshirt. Anyone in the know?

Boehning and DeJong each redshirted.

Finding a transfer able to play immediately and is a senior is a tall order, given that they would likely have to sit a year.

There are still quite a few graduate transfers that are elligible to play immediately.

Graduate transfers must enroll in a graduate program, so that limits who may be available also....if UM has the graduate program the player can fit into or wants then it might work...what I am basically saying is you can't just get a kid who has graduated and put him in basket weaving courses to maintain eligibility, he must be in an approved graduate school program....

I know the GRIZ have some interest in the AZ State SF, who just graduated. Sorry cannot remember his name.
Sai Tummala?

I believe that would be him. Go to his twitter acct. Coach DeCuire just added him a few weeks ago. To what extent we are looking at him, I don't know. I do know he announced he is looking for a program to xfr to

Thanks! I'll take your word for it. Just found it strange, that site is about as accurate and up to date as I've found regarding rosters and recruiting. Then with the talk about how unbalanced our classes are going to be it had me wondering.

Hey I'm new here to the boards but went to a bunch of the games as a student last season (first year in MT). What's the scoop on the team camp then, is it just high school players involved or does the team run practice and drills, etc? I would love to see some Griz offseason hoops...found myself bored without it. Are the camps in Dahlberg or the WAG? Thanks

Verbal commits is a good resource, but it's rarely accurate when it comes to having the correct classes for players. Idaho State's is a mess because they don't pick up on things like redshirts.

The team camp is normally 50+ hs teams from the region at it. It is terrific and getting a great reputation. Many coaches prefer it because the price is way more affordable than Gonzaga, WAZZU, Washington, etc. Depending on how many players are in town for the camp, they try to play as often as possible most the summer. During the camps, they usually play around 7PM, sometimes later. Most games are in the WAG. At worse, it is a great time to meet the coaches and players. It might not hurt to contact the men's basketball office to see if they are still needing help at any of the summer camps. It is a great experience. :thumb:

Per verbalcommits.com, Sai is transferring to Hawaii. :(
