Ferda?

I'm out of town, but noticed a one line statement on the net that Ferda had left the team. I know she had injuries, but there must be more to her situation. Seemed like a very good prospect.

Yes, unfortunate. She was at the UC Riverside game but not at the game against Weber State. So, decision to leave came about very recently.

Do not know why she left. Sure hope it wasn't the injuries that motivated her to quit. But if she found out from a doctor that she can't play on her foot, than she may not have a choice.

Robin will now have another scholarship to hand out this april. Hope it is a point guard. Hildal is supposed to be pretty good, but that is one position Lady Griz need more depth at.

I don't think she has "left the team". My understanding is she is going to petition the NCAA for a medical redshirt, which would mean she has 6 years to play 4. She was not improving, and may need to have surgery, if she hasn't already. It is unfortunate because the Lady Griz are as weak at PG as they have ever been. Shaunte is simply not very good. Her assist-to-turnover ratio is horrendous. For someone who coached a season, and is a SR, Shaunte makes freshmen level mistakes on a regular basis. I watched the last LG game on Big Sky TV and their achilles heal (PG) is going to haunt Selvig this season. On the other hand, I never underestimate Selvig's coaching prowess either.

Ahh, Thanks much for the information, and I'd certainly agree with your thoughts. What little I saw of Ferda, made me think she'd be a contributor. Re: Johnson- she certainly gives great effort, but often times her plans just don't work. And yes, Selvig just seems to get the job done. Thanks again...

Shaunte Johnson actually has a respectable 1.5 assist to turnover ratio this season. This is the best on the team.

This is better than any of the men's team point guards. In fact, it is better than any player on the men's team, except Staudacher.

By comparison, Mandy Morales had a 1.6 ratio last season. Shaunte had a 1.2 ratio last season, which was 2nd on the team, slightly better than Lohman.

Thanks Player Rep, that is an interesting statistic. Do you have access to just the number of turnovers and how she ranks there..She does hustle and sometimes is out of control,so perhaps thats what makes her turnovers seem more obvious.

Ferda has not left the team. Until Shaunte can break a full court press her time will be limited.

You better tell the Missoulian sports writer that covers the Lady griz that Ferda has not left the team even though she hasn't been at the last two games.

As for Shaunte's time being limited, I don't think playing 33 minutes in both todays game and against Weber State as being limited.

Shaunte has 62 assists and 42 turnovers in 14 games.

You can get the team stats and player stats at www.montanagrizzlies.com

By the way, Katie Baker is making me forget Jos Tinkle.

Ashely is a great kid and not a quitter by any means. I hope it's not career ending injury, becuase she has worked hard in the off-season to be able to be a solid player for the program. She still has a lot of work to do, but has the athletic ability and smarts to help any team. Hope she bounces back.

Agreed, she would have helped the LG this season. Shaunte, not so much

I think this should get you directly to the stats:

http://filemanager.montanagrizzlies.com/mtgriz3/schedules_and_stats/files/wbb/htm/2009-10/teamcume.htm

If not, go to montanagrizzlies.com; click on women's basketball; near the top click on schedule/stats; and near the top again click on season stats.

Note that in the schedule/stats link, on the right, there's a place to get the historical stats, by changing the year.

By the way, Shaunte has played in only 13 games this year, not 14, according to this stat link.

Well that Missoulian sportswriter corrected himself and stated Ashley has not left the team. Maybe his reporting style was to look down the Lady Griz bench see her missing and assume she left.

Anyway, Lady Griz now have two players that should be able to get medical redshirt and earn a sixth year to get 4. Ferda and Misty Atkinson. The question would be whether they stick around for that sixth year since it would be likely they will have finished there undergraduate studies. Looks like a good chance for these two girls to get their graduate studies paid for if they wanted to go higher than an undergraduate degree.

Anyway, it certainly caused a stir on this board and a flurry of posts on Lady Griz basketball for the first time in what seems like more than two months.

It certainly would have been preferable to talk about the next dominating center to play for the Lady Griz since Holly Tyler than talk about some players misfortune. Katie Baker is turning out to be the real deal and, barring injuries, should have a more successful career than Tyler. Baker is more mobile than Tyler and as a freshman is in better condition than Tyler was when she was a freshman. Tyler couldn't play more than 5 minutes without getting winded. Katie is playing near 30 minutes now.
Katie made 47 points and 25 rebounds in the first two Big Sky conference games of her career. Go find a player that had a better start as a freshman in conference.

I think Katie is listed as 6 foot, and she does a remarkable job for that height. It would indeed be nice to have a 6'4or 5" post player that could dunk flatfooted..Even tho the ladies are not off to their usual winning start, I think most fans believe the young talent will keep coming around, and we'll have a pretty good year. I've always felt that Robin developes his players very nicely. Perhaps not like Bobby Knight would, but still they always progress through the years.

Yes, she is 6'0". Lohman was I believe 6'1". So, Lady Griz have been quite small the past 2 to 3 years.

both Jordan Sullivan and Carly Selvig are 6'2" and both listed as forwards in the announcements of the recruits. lady Griz may end up with an team on the court at times with the forwards taller than the center. Carly is supposed to be good defensively and may play a lot at center. Maybe taller than 6'2" by next year.
