Feds to Begin Investigation

There seems to have been some questionable decisions made by the Missoula Police Department, the prosecutor's office and the handling of some of these issues at UM (Saudi kid). Not saying that these are cut and dry or easy decisions to be made. Perhaps these organizations can benefit from this in the end. Sunlight is the best disinfectant and will likely lead to better practices in the future. I wouldn't likely be saying this if the NCAA was on the doorstep.

Gotta say I enjoy the idea of Dr. Engstom's decisions being examined and scrutinized. That and having the taste of brylcreem in his mouth for awhile.

Chumly, the PD doesn't decide who to prosecute and they were unaware of the Saudis doings until a week after the fact when UM let them know.

Your post borders on slander. I know several detectives and they have daughters , and your accusation that they would look the other way is way out of line.

Get this dumbass, it is not their job to decide who gets prosecuted, that decision belongs to the city or county attorney. F..you for impugning their integrity.

Will agree Engstrom has a lot of questions to answer in this matter and he hasn't really manned up so far.

Dear hot-head,

I'm aware that the police don't decide who gets prosecuted. They do however have (or should have) standardized procedures for investigating sexual assualts and how they deal with victims. If the victim in the 2010 gang rape is to believed she reported that a detective told her the guys seemed sorry (paraphrasing here). Not sure that is the best method to tell a victim that there wasn't enough evidence to move forward with the case.

Don't take my word on police possibly being able to improve their procedures, why don't you take Police Chief Muir's word for it:

Chief Muir: Police must communicate better with sex assault victims

My dad was a police officer and I grew up around the men and the culture. I have two good friends that are police officers. Police officers are just like anybody else, there are good ones and not so good ones. The good ones make mistakes too not because they are stupid or incompetent but because it is such a difficult job.

Do you need a ladder to get off of your high horse?

the only thing i don't like about this is the people behind this get to blame ANYBODY they want in the news and NOBODY gets to know WHO is blaming them, chickshit!

I'm not worried. All the demons were exorcised on March 29. The Griz are now as clean as the driven snow. Right? Thats what Engstrom told me.

An act of desperation and/or futility? Throwing two people under the bus in a vain attempt to placate the lynch mob?

A presidential election year with a vulnerable and desperate incumbent and an attack dog AG eager to nail any pelts to the fence for his re-election effort? How far do they want to dig under this rock? Seems like it would lead anywhere and everywhere, and so far it is yielding results at Penn State and at Montana, perhaps a peek under a log at MSU now has attracted attention. Seems like it would yield results anywhere college sports are played.

I welcome the investigation. Maybe some facts will come out rather than rumor and innuendo. That might be a good thing for all involved. As the saying goes, 'the truth shall set you free". If you have nothing to hide then you have nothing to worry about. Let's get this done and move on.

Best to have the investigation be as complete as can be - and then move on.

That would be true if it wasnt for the fact that two federal investigations will move like snails. In the end they will likely suggest changes in process that have already been implemented. During that extended period there may be a lot of unintended (?) consequences to the programs that are unfair. This isnt a search for justice so all those sorts of justifications are misplaced.

Actually, the investigators from the Office of Civil Rights should be done in a month or so. OCR investigations usually take 30 days to complete, at least according to the OCR office and Gwen Florio. I think we will see reports on what issues are uncovered or disproved sometime in June. If all parties involved cooperate that is.

National story now. NYTimes, Washington Post, Miami Herarld to name a few that are running the story this morning. Not good!!

Would everybody who says it's gonna get "ugly" like to tell us what that means in practical terms? Arrests? Indictments? Inquisitions? Lynch mobs or witch hunts?

If you are identifying a problem, why don't you offer a solution. In other words, what would you propose?

This is good news. Enough rumor. Enough cries of coverup. Pull the curtain back and clean up the process.

Honestly I dont expect much to come from the "Investigation". Assuming theres no hidden smoking gun here. UM, MPD, and the Missoula County attorneys offices will come under scrutiny but unless there is some hidden cover-up (which I doubt) the investigation will be little more than a formality.

If Engstrom gets run outta town then there would be some good come from this however. UM athletics is not to blame for this situation its UM itself. Blaming the AD and football coach for the acts of a few kids on the team and a whole bunch of UM students is bs.

Time after time the Missoulian would run an article attacking UM football as supposed rapists then have an article on the same page with a Missoula man or student (not an athlete) convicted of sexual assault/rape . Seriously this happened almost everytime Gwen Florio wanted to attack um in her toilet rag of a paper.

The entire rape/sexual assault issue is only going to be reduced by the whole community, and the ENTIRE univeristy stepping up and taking it head on instead of trying to blame some "dumb jocks" for it.

But I seriously doubt anthing will come of this investigation of allegations of misconduct that is obviously been charged by someone who hates UM and has an axe to grind. Most likely a couple recomendations etc.

Donations to the UM are going to come to a standstill until this is cleared up! Recruiting is just begining to have some problems. Potential students on every team sport are questioning the entire program!

Can you imagine a mother of a potential athlete coming to the rape capitol of the USA? Yes if this mess is cleaned up in three or four months the problems will remain with us for a year or two. My sense is the football program etc. will take more bad press but all in all I believe it will end with about what we know at this point with more bad press.

OK, we all are pleased this is occuring. What I am not happy about is the long drawn out bad to the bone press, that in it'self is not good!

Recruiting is doing just fine, despite your guesswork to the contrary. The rape capitol of the US? FFS, drama queen or what? Have a nice day Gwen.

UM is not the rape capitol of anything. Google University of (fill in the blank) and rape. Its probably an average university for its size in crimes of all sorts.

This is still Penn state child rape hysteria at its finest complete with pitchforks etc. Guess this BS has to run its course. But its still bullshit.

Umista, you talk to potential recruits in EVERY sports UM offers? Holy moly your cell phone bill must be huge. And congrats to you my friend, you must be a super intelligent man and speak a lot of foreign languages too. You'd have to to talk to many of the Griz and Lady Griz tennis recruits.
