FCS Title Contenders - FCS Football Central/SI

Regardless of everything else they lost, you simply don’t lose a four year starting quarterback who wins the Walter Payton award, plays in two national championships, gets drafted into the NFL and not go backwards from that alone. Tommy is literally the engine who made that machine go….his loss will be much more profound and impactful than anyone over there wants to admit.
We open with Oregon and SDSU. Without Tommy, I'm more than worried. It's going to be a battle all season. Last season was easy on my heart and liver. That won't be the case this season. It very well could cause me to drink more. A lot more.

I agree with you. So is that even more of an indictment on the competition or lack thereof that NDSU was facing in the 2010’s in the FCS? Or how much they put themselves in front of everyone else?

I assume the 2007 team wasn’t listed because as he stated these were post season rankings. Pretty sure that was the Wofford year and likely affected the final rankings metrics given how bad of a loss that was. Pretty sure that team was absolutely a title contender undefeated heading into that game.

Curious for others to chime in on big misses though. 3 missed in 30 years isn’t terrible out of 120. Hindsight is always 20/20 though, so I’m taking it for what it is as a fun look back at what the FCS was and where it is now.
Wasn’t that the Chris Snyder miss game? Man, he was Mr. automatic and he just felt awful, the poor guy. If I recall correctly, people said that game was pretty chilly (Please just don’t with the loud and cold bs… please) and they were one of the”Those running teams” during the years where the Griz just seemed to be on the drunk struggle bus trying to rein in. I was listening to the first part of that game on my way back from Helena, and got to watch the fourth quarter at home; it was brutal, just brutal.

Dan Carpenter, but yes. He missed the winning kick as time expired. And yeah, the game was super cold. The mic also didn't work during the national anthem, so the whole crowd sang it, instead.

Surprising that SDSU was the only contender in 2023. If Cliff scores late in first half and we don’t fumble the completed pass at start of 2d half at midfield, maybe UM is the only contender.
And the 4th down run in the first quarter crosses the end zone by an inch instead of short by an inch we go up 7-0 on the rabbits. That would have tightened their sphincters more than they already were and changed the entire complexion of the game.

Snyder’s last season was 2003.

I hope so, although this Daily is not related to Bobby & Brad Daly from Helena. Too bad for us Bobcats that Tommy Mellott only has sisters! I always enjoy seeing multiple guys from the same family come through the programs on either side of the rivalry.
Grebe. Overrated.

Oline was 10 deep at starters last year and losing a few wont matter. They set the tone for everyone in the running to get yards, no matter who ran it. i think we have the same situation this year with 10 starters on Oline and RBs will get lots of yards. The difference will be if the QB selected can actually complete 150+ yards passing a game to force D to play against the pass. 200 yards passing a game, MSU doesn't lose.

D some questions that need worked out but i see no reason to panic. i see a loss at O, win at gold rush and the only game i expect to be close is in zoo town. so yes, i see 10-1 going into CatGriz game and i expect a 9-2 griz team going for the BSC title. as for a winner, home team has had the advantage but i expect a close game decided by less than 7 AS OF TODAY. Injuries and other factors still could change everything.
You have another 4.3 QB going to the NFL replacing Tommy? Because a LARGE part of your O was predicated on what HE was going to do…

You weren’t 10 deep. Who from OL went to the nfl this year. Tommy was the key to your success. Your lack of talent is what will cloud your future. A lot of Cat fans are stupid.

Hate to say it, and will be happy to be wrong here.

I think the Cats have built their program of reloading every year. They'll drop off some this season. Unfortunately, they're still Big Sky conference title contenders and playoff team.

Perhaps, but nothing I said was not accurate. There's no way the Cats will be as good without Mellott. And, the Cats don't have enough remaining talent to make up for not getting more top players in the Portal.

I did say, they'll drop off some this season.

What about the QB from Stanford the cats recruited ? He looks like a good one. Better than Mellot IMO. Mellot was overrated as a QB. Evidence is he was not drafted as a QB like Cam Miller was. Mellot will be lucky if he makes the roster.

While the Stanford QB may be good or fairly good, Mellott was special. One of the best ever in the Big Sky, in my view. He was just so fast, athletic and smart, that he was going to find a way to beat you. He wasn't just a traditional QB. He will make it in the NFL.

Tommy had a great work ethic and smart. I hope he makes it in the NFL. Time will tell.

So FCS has been watered down since 2011, with the early to mid 2010s being the most watered down. Gotten better in recent years but mid 2000s to 2010 generally had the most teams.

Yes, FCS became watered down when that little North Dakota D2 took over and, along with many of its other conference members, starting beating up on FCS schools and putting a lot of players in the NFL.
