Now that I've had a chance to absorb the poll, I find a few things I expected and a couple of big surprises.

I nailed the fact that the Griz would come in a #17. And, as I said in my guesses thread, I thought they might put UNI ahead of MSU rather than the other way around ... and they did. (The pollsters really do love Northern Iowa.) As I also predicted, the pollsters dropped Villanova and added Charleston Southern in their place. (That means we will have a seventh ranked-vs-ranked game new weekend.

The first surprise was how far they dropped South Dakota State. I had them going down to #11 after their close (1 FG) loss to UNI. You'd think, since the pollsters love UNI so much, that a loss to such a powerful[?] opponent would not hurt that much ... yet they dropped SDSU all the way to #14. Ouch.

The other big surprise was how far they dropped Youngstown State, which barely survived in the top-25. They lost on the road by just a TD, but dropped nine spots. Ouch, again.

A mild, but good, surprise was the fact that Portland State moved up a bit more than I expected. All the better for the Griz when they go over and kick their butts (well win, anyway).

So I'm curious... why, and what's the point of including teams like Harvard in the rankings when they don't even participate in the playoffs?

I do find it interesting that a 5-2 SUU team (whose only losses are to FBS schools) that's won 5 straight and given up just NINE points in going 4-0 in conference to date is considered a worse team than a 4-3 Indiana State team that's lost 2 of it's last 3, or a UNI or YSU team that are both 1-3 in their conference.

Some schools just never get any respect.

I do think you have to earn respect, and when you are coming up from the bottom they don't give it much credit until you prove your self year in year out.
Plus they really have not played the upper tier of the BSC yet but that starts now so we shall see if they are a contender or pretender.

Understood, but they're not just beating those bottom tier teams, they're beating them like rented mules...in extremely convincing fashion (unlike our Griz, by the way). I guess reputation is everything...

They got destroyed by South Dakota State, UNI beat them.

How about South Dakota at 4-3/2-2 being unranked, even after a win two weeks ago at NDSU, while UNI at 3-4/1-3 is 18th?

The USD/UNI game this Saturday looks to be a playoff game, with the loser likely being done for the year since USD still has @Illinois State to play on 11/21.
