FCS STATS Poll Guesses (Nov 5)

There were “only” six upsets among the ranked teams, so I expect more of a re-arrangement among the top-25 rather than any big changes.

Guess, Team (Record), [Current Rank]
1 James Madison (9-0) [1]
2 Jacksonville State (8-1) [3]
3 Central Arkansas (8-1) [4]
4 Sam Houston State (8-1) [5]
5 Elon (8-1) [7]
6 North Dakota State (8-1) [2]
7 South Dakota State (7-2) [10]
8 Wofford (8-1) [8]
9 North Carolina A&T (9-0) [9]
10 Grambling State (8-1) [13]
11 South Dakota (7-2) [6]
11 Stony Brook (7-2) [14]
13 Western Illinois (6-3) [15]
14 Weber State (7-2) [19]
15 Samford (6-3) [16]
16 Southern Utah (7-2) [17]
17 Illinois State (6-3) [12]
18 Eastern Washington (5-4)
19 New Hampshire (6-3) [21]
20 McNeese (7-2) [22]
21 Furman (6-3) [23]
22 Western Carolina (7-3) [24]
23 Northern Arizona (6-3) [18]
24 Kennesaw State (8-1) [25]
25 Richmond (5-4) NR

Villanova (4-5) [20]

But there are several key questions that stand out. NDSU lost by double-digits, but it was on the road and to a highly ranked team. There are those that think they will not drop as much as my formulas suggest … and, given the pollsters love for “reputation,” they could be right. Some on here will point out that I still have SDSU (the winner) one spot down from NDSU. Well, they do still have those 2 losses, and we’ve seen it many times before where the head-to-head winner does not moved ahead of the loser. I’m expecting that to happen here.

Most of the loser drops are pretty “standard,” with the exception of EWU. Yes, they lost to a ranked team. But I expect the pollsters to punish them a lot, partly because the Eags lost at home and also because the voters have shown no respect for the Big Sky … but mostly because of that 5-4 record. In fact, I would not be surprised if they dropped even further. Conversely, I may have given SUU too big a jump … again because the pollsters seem down on the BSC. For the same reason, NAU could drop another spot, although I do think they stay in the top-25.

I figure Richmond’s “upset” of 4-4 Villanova allows them to sneak into the top-25, but just barely. Unfortunately, the six teams ahead of the Griz in votes all won, so I see little hope that UM could move back into the top-25. Yes, they beat a ranked team, but just barely (at home) and with the weird Cookus stuff that will cause many to discount the win. (Hope I'm wrong, but don't think so.)

I couldn’t agree more. With as little love as we were receiving when we were in the polls, we won’t be getting any more come tomorrow either. We’ll still be outside the Top 25 in both polls, especially the coaches poll who haven’t given us one lick of respect all year.

F*** U we back in top 25 u have a seat. Beat a ranked team with a WR. He'll yeah Griz are bad ass. #gogriz :D

at this point I'm thinking win out and we still go in unranked. and that just might be a good thing.

Kinda my thinking to. Not sure how they'd justify it, but I can see it happening

My guesses were actually pretty good, with 21 on the nose or within ±1. Had 2 that were off by two spots: I had Elon moving up to #5, but the pollsters filled that and the next spot with MVFC teams … so the Phoenix ended up at #7. The other off by two spots was Western Illinois, which I projected at #13, but the pollsters nudged them up to #11. Oh well.

Had two “bad beats,” both of which I “shoulda known better.” My formulas gave Grambling the #10 spot, but they did not move up at all. That’s probably deserved … the SWAC is just too weak*. The other was my attempt to move Richmond (5-4) in at #25 after their upset over Villanova. Dumb move. I should have known that UNI (5-4 also) would get that spot.

* Edit: In fact, it's crazy that Grambling is ranked as high as #13. I have no problem with the pollsters considering a SWAC team, just as an in-season "reward." And the conference could, in theory, get an at-large bid. But the thought that they would is laughable ... with their two best teams locked into their own post-season stuff.
