“Only” six ranked teams lost this weekend, so we should not expect huge changes in the polls. However, the fact that two of the losers were teams in the top-10 means there will certainly be some effect.
Poll guess, Team (Record), [Current Rank]
1 Jacksonville St (9-1) [1]
2 North Dakota State (8-2) [2]
3 McNeese State (9-0) [3]
4 Coastal Carolina (9-1) [4]
5 South Dakota State (8-2) [5]
6 Illinois State (8-2) [6]
7 William & Mary (8-2) [7]
8 Chattanooga (8-2) [8]
9 Charles Southern (9-1) [11]
10 Sam Houston State (7-3) [13]
11 James Madison (8-2) [14]
12 Portland State (8-2) [15]
13 Fordham (9-2) [16]
14 Richmond (7-3) [9]
15 Northern Iowa (6-4) [17]
16 Harvard (8-1) [12]
17 Montana (6-4) [22]
18 NC A&T (9-1) [19]
19 Eastern Washington (6-4) [10]
20 Dartmouth (8-1) [23]
21 E Kentucky (6-4) [24]
22 Northern Arizona (7-3) [NR]
23 Southern Utah (7-3) [18]
24 Grambling (8-2) [25]
25 Villanova (6-4) [NR]
NR Citadel (7-3) [21]
NR Youngstown State (5-5) [20]
Richmond, with its close loss, might not drop quite as much as I project. However, it was to an unranked team, so I used the usual five spots. That puts them where their 7-3 record looks about right. Note that I also took SUU down five spots. They lost to a ranked team, but don’t have the rep to help them. We’ll see.
I hammered EWU a whole lot more, even though they lost to a ranked opponent (the Griz, yah!). And it was not just the beat-down UM put on them (although that was certainly part of it). But the main reason was because this was their second bad loss in a row (remember, they lost by 22 to NAU).
As usual, UNI looks weird sitting at #15, but that seems to be what the pollsters want. And having their 6-4 record sitting there makes what I did for the Griz look a little better. With #18, #20, and #21 all losing, UM was guaranteed to move up at least three spots. I nudged them up a couple more because (1) the Griz do benefit from their rep, (2) they beat a top-10 team, and (3) they imposed a beat-down on said top-10 team. I may be overly optimistic in this, but I think it could happen. (And they’re my guesses ... so What the Hell!)
Sitting at 21, Citadel simply could not afford to lose, so they’re out of the top-25. Youngstown might have barely hung on, but I think that 5-5 record drags them out. That left two open spots, and NAU was the obvious first choice since they were the top “Other” receiving votes in the last poll. Tennessee-Martin was just behind NAU in votes ... but they lost. I decided that ‘Nova’s win over the #9 team would earn them some love, so I put them in at #25.
Should be interesting tomorrow.
