Really glad to see the pollsters were “kinder” (more realistic) about Cal Poly than I expected. They were also nicer to Youngstown State than I thought they'd be. Those differences, of course, meant that the Griz did not rise as much as I expected. But that’s fine: On the record so far, I think #18 looks about right.

But they actually pounded Western Illinois down one more spot than I expected (Ouch!). The other surprise was the move by Liberty from only getting 24 voter points in the last poll all the way to #25. I guessed that Wofford would make it, but they ended up #26. Oh well.

Overall, I’m not too unhappy with my guesses … I got 21 on the nose or within a couple of spots.

NC A&T and Chuck South belong in the top 20-25 and no higher. In fact no one would argue if you dropped Chuck South out...SD State is ranked too high also...

The Any Given Saturday poll is up too!

Upcoming Games (added above)
Only two matchups between ranked teams this week.

Several ranked teams get apparent patsies … but we’ve seen that that does not always work out for the supposedly “better” team. Still, it’s hard to see how Northwestern State (1-8), whose only win this year was against a D-II opponent, could possible take down Sam Houston (9-0).

Delaware State (0-9) has won just one game in the past two years (even in the weak MEAC). What are their chances of upsetting NC A&T (8-1)? Since the Griz put 62 points on ISU (2-7), EWU (8-1) might burn out the scoreboard next weekend.

Still, there are some interesting matchups. It starts near the top with #2 Jacksonville State (8-1) at Murray State (4-5). Murray’s bad record goes back to a four-game losing streak to start the season (including a loss to FBS Illinois.) Now they are on a three-game winning streak and have won four of their last five games.

#7 Chattanooga (8-1) gets Wofford (6-3) at home, which should help. But Wofford has won three of their last four games, with their only loss to The Citadel in overtime.

#12 North Dakota (8-2) vs NAU (5-4) is a bit like the Murray State case. After going 1-4 to start the season NAU has now won four in a row.

#16 Cal Poly (6-3) visiting Weber State (5-4) would seem to be the only plus for Weber. But if WSU could regain their mid-season form, this game could get interesting.

There are some other in-between possibilities, but the most interesting is Harvard (7-1) going into Penn (5-3). Harvard would seem to be the better team. But Penn could spoil Harvard’s chance to go undefeated in conference and tie them for the Ivy lead. That would also give Penn the tie-breaker over Harvard for conference championship. They will be fired up!

The game with James Madison (6-0) at Villanova (5-1) is shaping up to be for the championship … with some possible questions. Obviously, if JMU wins (on the road), they are pretty much a lock. Their final opponent is Elon (1-5) at home, so they’d be a prohibitive favorite to go undefeated in conference and win the championship/auto-bid.

But if Villanova wins (at home, remember), things get much more interesting. Villanova’s final game is at Delaware (2-4, 4-5), so they are most likely to win that too. Then JMU and 'Nova would each end up at 7-1 in conference. Meanwhile, New Hampshire (5-1) faces Albany (2-4) at home, then goes on the road to Maine (4-2). If they were to win out – not at all a given – they too would be 7-1. The rest of the top teams already have two losses going into the weekend.

Then it would come down to a three-way tie-breaker, so: Who knows? Villanova would have the tie-breaker over JMU, while JMU has the tie-breaker over UNH. Unfortunately, with their unbalanced schedule, UNH and 'Nova did not play. Villanova’s one loss was to Richmond, but UNH did not play Richmond either. After all that, I would lean toward the tie-breakers favoring Villanova for the auto-bid (and a co-championship).

No implications for the FCS playoffs, but one ranked team (#24 Harvard) is playing this evening. They are at Penn and the game is being telecast on DirecTV channel 220.

Several games with playoff implications starting at 10:00 MT tomorrow morning. So far, however, have not found that any of those are being broadcast. Sigh. (But that could change.)

Meanwhile: GO GRIZ! :egriz:

First upset of the "weekend" -- Penn over #24 Harvard. Fairly boring game until over halfway thru the 4th quarter. Then it got pretty exciting. Harvard tied it late, using a trick play for a 2-point conversion. Then Penn had its best drive -- by far -- of the night to take a 21-14 lead with 15-sec left. Final score 27-14 because Harvard's desperation "hook and lateral" play went the wrong way at the end. Crazy game.

Updated: 8:50 MT. All the games involving ranked teams are over. Eight ranked teams lost ... practically a third of the top-25. I have not counted them yet, but it seemed like there are a bunch of teams with the same 6-4 record as the Griz. The next poll could be weird. And no, I do not think the Griz will drop out of the top-25 (still, I have been wrong before).

Almost 26 min left in the tie game between Portland State and Sac State.
