FCS Poll Guesses (Oct 9)

The Griz were not the only team playing a cupcake this weekend, so we were a bit thin on dramatic upsets to stir the pot for the next poll. I almost decided to skip my guesses for this week, but I thought: Why mess with tradition?

Guess, Team (Record), [Current Rank]
1 North Dakota State (5-0) [1]
2 SHSU (5-0) [2]
3 Jacksonville State (4-1) [3]
4 EWU (5-1) [4]
5 Chattanooga (6-0) [5]
6 Richmond (5-1) [6]
7 James Madison (5-1) [7]
8 Charleston Southern (3-2) [8]
9 Citadel (5-0) [9]
10 Montana (4-1) [10]
11 SDSU (3-2) [12]
12 Western Illinois (4-1)
13 Villanova (5-1) [14]
14 YSU (4-1) [15]
15 Coastal Carolina (3-2) [17]
16 North Car. A&T (4-1) [18]
17 Eastern Illinois (4-2) [19]
18 Cal Poly (3-2) [21]
19 Albany (4-1) [16]
20 Harvard (4-0) [22]
21 North Dakota (4-2) [24]
22 Central Arkansas (4-1) [25]
23 Northern Iowa (2-3) [11]
24 Samford (4-1) [NR]
25 Grambling State (4-1) [NR]

NR McNeese (3-3) [20]
NR Illinois State (2-4) [23]

But really, I mostly decided there were a couple of intriguing possibilities that might make it worth doing. First, there’s the question about McNeese. They lost on the road to a not-very-good SE Louisiana team … but on a last-second strike. So maybe the pollsters will cut them a little more slack and keep them in the top-25. No intrigue about Illinois State, BTW, they’ll surely drop out.

But the second point of interest is what might happen to Northern Iowa. They lost on the road by only a FG -- but I’m still guessing they’ll drop a dozen spots. Thing is, that losing record sticks out like the proverbial sore thumb. So it would not surprise me a lot if they dropped all the way out of the top-25. If that happens, my candidate to take their place would be New Hampshire (4-2), which squeaked out a win at Elon.

Leaning more towards the notion that Northern Iowa is safe in the top-25 after reading a recent post over at STATS.com:
Haley said:
As the middle of the FCS regular season arrives, a whopping seven teams that were nationally ranked in the preseason are floundering under losing records.

The most promising situation belongs to Northern Iowa (2-3, 1-1 Missouri Valley), which was ranked fifth in the preseason. … UNI played such a tough non-conference schedule and had a win over an FBS opponent (Iowa State) that even a 6-5 record may land it an at-large bid - like Western Illinois last year.

So even though UNI has lost 3 of their last 4 games ... they are still, somehow, a powerhouse. ;)
