FCS Poll Guesses (Oct 14)

With the Griz now playing just to (maybe) have a winning season and/or beat the Kats, guessing the next FCS poll is a lot less fun. But … life (and football) goes on. I must say, with the blood-bath in the top ten, this next poll could be especially interesting. I flip-flopped ND State and MSU because NDS lost to an unranked team, while the kitties lost to #6. Teams that lost are in red.

Poll guess, team, (record) [previous poll position]
1. James Madison (5-1) [4]
2. Eastern Washington (5-1) [6]
3. Georgia Southern (5-1) [7]
4. Sam Houston State (4-2) [9]
5. Lehigh (7-0) [10]
6. Montana State (6-1) [2]
7. North Dakota State (5-1) [1]
8. Wofford (5-1) [5]
9. Old Dominion (5-1) [3]
10. Stony Brook (6-1) [11]
11. New Hampshire (5-2) [12]
12. Appalachian State (5-2) [13]
13. Youngstown State (4-2) [8]
14. Cal Poly (6-0) [15]
15. Illinois State (6-1) [14]
16. Northern Arizona (5-1) [16]
17. Towson (3-3) [17]
18. Tennessee State (7-0) [18]
19. South Dakota State (5-1) [20]
20. Central Arkansas (5-2) [21]
21. Harvard (5-0) [22]
22. Eastern Kentucky (5-2) [23]
23. McNeese State (4-2) [19]
24. Indiana State (5-2) [NR]
25. Delaware (4-2) [24]

NR Samford (5-2) [25]

Cal Poly, with its undefeated records, could/should move up a lot more, but the pollsters have not shown them much respect in the past, so I just nudged them ahead of one-loss Illinois State. I thought about moving Indiana State up more -- and it would not surprise me if they did come in higher.

I've been wondering why Poly isn't in the top 10 by now..but what do I know.
I'd like to think their undefeated record would finally give them a boost. But, as you say: What do we know?

So are the Griz not anywhere near playoff picture?

If we win out, then we might get in. We'll have 7 D1 wins, and will have finished the season strong. What would really help (as much as I hate to say it) is the cats winning out as well, with the exception of the game against us of course. The higher the cats are ranked when we beat them the better for us.

If we drop the game @UND, it's over. If we win the next 3 then lose to the cats, it's over.

I don't see North Dakota State dropping below #4. Teir Sagarin ratign will still probably be the best in the FCS. Seriously, does anyone really think Lehigh should be above Cal Poly? I think Cal Poly will jump to the top 8 this week.

"Never say never." (Heard that somewhere.)

But it's hard to see a scenario -- even running the table from here -- where a team with four losses, three in conference, would get a bid from the BSC. Right now the BSC has three teams with no conference losses and two with only one.
In a best (for the Griz) case, Cal Poly might lose 2 (EWU and NAU), but is not likely to lose a third. EWU plays CP, so one does have to get another loss -- but otherwise EWU should win out. Same with NAU: They play CP, but their other games look very winnable. MSU and Sac State (one conference loss each) might each lose two more, but that seems pretty unlikely.

So that's probably four teams with just one or two losses at the end. Of course, some think the BSC could somehow get 5 bids: I wouldn't say that was impossible, but I find it pretty unlikely.

UND, ISU and Weber have 4 wins total and about 15 or so loses to date, I doubt that beating them (if we can) can be called finishing strong...

a win over the cats may, may improve our chances if we do win. But I fear that our season is pretty much a over on Nov 17th

Oh I definitely agree. That's why we NEED the cats to win the rest of their games before we beat them. That would be the only game that would hint at us finishing the season strong :) If the cats drop another game before we play them, it's going to significantly decrease our chances of getting into the playoffs. Even if everything goes right in terms of us winning out and beating a top 5 cat team, I could see us being left out still. Sucks to be in this position this early in the season :(

Be interesting if this turns out:

Eastern Washington could even leap from No. 6 to No. 1, having now beaten FBS Idaho and defending Big Sky co-champions Montana and Montana State (27-24 on Saturday), and has only lost by four points to FBS Washington State.
