FCS Poll Guesses (Oct 12)

Again we had five ranked teams losing yesterday. Three of them lost to other ranked teams and should not get hurt too bad. Not so for the other two.

Rank Guess, Team (Record), Current Rank
1. NDSU (6-0) [1]
2. SDSU (6-0) [2]
3. Tarleton State (7-0) [3]
4. Montana (6-0) [4]
5. Montana State (5-2) [5]
6. UC Davis (5-1) [6]
7. Lehigh (7-0) [7]
8. Illinois State (4-2) [9]
9. Tennessee Tech (6-0) [10]
10. Monmouth (5-1) [12]
11. North Dakota (4-2) [13]
12. Southern Illinois (4-2) [8]
13. Jackson State (5-1) [15]
14. Rhode Island (5-2) [17]
15. Villanova (4-2) [18]
16. Abilene Christian (3-3) [19]
17. Lamar (5-1) [20]
18. Northern Arizona (4-3) [14]
19. Harvard (4-0) [22]
20. South Dakota (4-3) [23]
21. Idaho (2-4) [11]
22. Presbyterian (6-0) [23]
23. Austin Peay (4-3) [16]
24. West Georgia (5-2) [21]
25. Mercer (5-1) [25]

Stephen F. Austin (4-2) [NR] Idle

The top of the list should see no changes. Both Montana teams won handily. Still, because the poll votes for last week were so close, it would not shock me if they switched positions.

Southern Illinois got creamed on the road at #1 NDSU. The usual rule of thumb for that leads to a drop of 2-3 spots. However, because the game was so one-sided, I’m thinking perhaps a bit more, so the Salukis could slip out of the top-10.

That brings us to Idaho, which lost (badly) in a home shocker to unranked Northern Colorado. Not only were the Bears unranked, they have not been receiving any votes in the polls. I expect this to be a crippling blow to the Vandals The usual formula leads to a drop of seven to as many as ten spots in such cases. But in that part of the list, their (2-4) record sticks out like a sore thumb, even if you concede that two of the losses were to FBS opponents. (FWIW, those opponents were Washington State, 3-3, and San Jose State, 2-4.) I’m going to guess ten spots down, but it will not surprise me if the pollsters drop UI out of the top-25.

The road loss by Northern Arizona at #6 UC Davis is another case where a loss to a ranked team shouldn’t hurt too much. However, I’m not sure the pollsters will cut them as much slack as they will for Southern Illinois. It’ll be interesting to find out.

I think Austin Peay has been coasting a bit in the polls based on their opening game “upset” of FBS Middle Tennessee. However, we now know that MTSU (1-5) is crap. I think the Governor’s loss to unranked Eastern Kentucky will hurt them badly. (Again, not only is E Kentucky not ranked, they have not been receiving any votes.) I think the pollsters will hit them hard, although they will probably hang on in the top-25.

The same can probably be said for West Georgia, which lost at home to #19 Abilene Christian. The Wolves have now lost two in a row. However, both were to ranked teams, so I think the pollsters will keep them (barely) in the top-25.

If they drop out instead, or perhaps Idaho drops all the way out, the question could become who replaces them. The top “Other” vote-getter in the last poll, Youngstown State, lost, so they are not going to move up. The next two were both Idle. Stephen F. Austin, with a good win over Incarnate Word, would seem to be the most likely replacement.

I'm not so sure that the Griz stay put this week. Sam Herder almost moved them down but then decided to leave them in his poll, and Craig Haley did move them down along with somebody else that I can't remember right now. Whoever It was also had UC Davis above the Griz. Some of these guys are clueless.

Very clueless....UC Davis beats CP by 7 at home and the Griz beat CP by 19 at home yet UCD goes above the Griz...the hate for the Griz is strong in that one...or he is jealous because the Griz throwback jerseys were on ESPN.

As I said, it would not shock me if the Griz drop below the kitties.

For me, the most interesting point will be what the pollsters do with Idaho. Again, this list is my best guesses of what the pollsters will do. If I did a list of my own, the Spuds would not be on it. Sure, they've had some tough losses, but their lonely two wins are nothing to get excited about (Utah Tech, 1-4, and St. Thomas-Minn, 3-3).
