Early in the season, it looked as if NDSU might finally becoming beatable again. Their young QB seemed like a far cry from the great string of QBs that paraded through there. But now, they look much like previous editions, with their defense so dominating that it gives opponents little chance, no matter how average the NDSU offense is.

This is why I believe the formula for going deep into the play-offs, and for winning a NC is having a great defense. Unfortunately, playing in the offense-minded Big Sky Conference, where every team seems to focus on out-scoring opponents, and some defenses switch to a 3-3-5 to try to defend these offenses, they are exposed in the playoffs by the more traditional schemes, which focus on having a defense to stop the run-first, and having a balanced offense.
