The Cats are killing recruiting and player development.

I'd say what they're really killing is leveraging the players they've recruited to be really good at what those players' skills allow. Mellott and Chambers & run the dam ball. Leaning on a strategy that focuses heavily on Montana Kids and not on finding the best players wherever they may be is going to continue to have them at a disadvantage against the Dakota schools for as long as the FCS is still viable.

They're not dependent on Montana players. They have effectively incorporated them into their scheme.

Not dependent upon Mellott or O'Reilly? Or Dowler or Perkins? Yeah, they are dependent upon them.

When you have more than forty of them on the roster and just signed twelve in the last recruiting class, you're depending upon them to be players, and in turn, to be productive starters, as needed. If not, you have an idiot for a coach.

SDSU has 28 kids from SD on their roster, NDSU had 25 from ND. There's a really good reason for that. And neither of those teams, "incorporates' homegrown kids into their scheme. Neither do bozeman or Montana. A recruit isn't something to add to the whole, they're expected to contribute because when given proper coaching & development, they are supposed to already have the kinds of talent necessary to be a player at this level. All of them. Better recruiting begins with acknowledging that the goal is to build the foundation from the best players, wherever they may be from. The Dakota teams get this. And they also get that this is possible because of the FCOA programs in place. It's a recruiting disadvantage for Montana.

And no, I have no solution to that dilemna, only think it's among the reasons to temper expectations.

Had no drop-off when Mellott missed three games this year. You could make a pretty strong argument that they struggled more when Chambers was hurt. The Cat's defense was horrible except when they played the Griz and Dowler was no factor for most of the season season.

Actually, went right down the field when both Chambers and Mellott were in game. Mellott didn't get hurt until later in the game. Chambers did when they marched right down the field. Did you even watch the game? And to think, we didn't make that offense punt one time, gave up 450 yards rushing to them, and fortunately, they called off the dogs or they would have hung 70 on us.

Dowler led the conference in punt returns. He was also the opening-day starter at one receiver spot. Gatorade player of the year. He's what Montana is producing as D1 level material these days because of the way the teams play. Not his fault they didn't need to throw him the ball.

Chambers is a necessity. No QB in that style offense is going to make it through the season unscathed, they were fortunate to have them both. But that wasn't by accident. Mellott was the catalyst as to the decision to go with this kind of offense, or they would have found someone to actually be able to better throw the ball.

Having forty kids from Montana on the bozeman roster wasnt the key to winning a conference championship. But if that number were closer to twenty five, and there were fifteen or so guys, with D! skills, from somewhere else USA, it might have been a different season for them.

You could very reasonably count Washington in our “neighboring state” category. And if you do then we have the advantage, so I’m not sure these numbers really matter that much

And you could "reasonably count" Wisconsin, Illinois and Kansas which are closer to ND and SD than Washington is to Bozeman or Billings and MT would be dwarfed even further.
