FBS pay games

A question for someone hopefully in the know. Why is it we only play tough FBS teams for these pay games? I look at the teams that are in our conference and see SDSU Utah State Washington State Tulsa UNLV Colorado Colorado State. In recent memory it’s Oregon and Washington for us. It’s fine to get these games and the big payday, but why are they the only ones we’re getting games with? I’m going to enjoy the hell out of getting to see our team play and I certainly understand that we could lose to any of those other teams, but it would be nice to see a payday game and think there would is a legitimate chance of an upset and not a snowballs chance in Bozeman.

It's really simple and has been gone over numerous times. We play these games for money that is at least the equivalent of our net for a OOC home game. Only the big teams pay that money, e.g. $650,000. The beatable teams you mention are capable of paying only about half that, so it would be a net loss for the AD and these days we can't afford that. The 2014 Wyoming game was the exception, I believe we were paid about $400,000 after a lot of negotiating. It was a loss relative to a home game, but a gift to the fans at a time when we were better able to afford it. Haslam has obvious connections to USU and has had numerous discussions with them over the years that have been unsuccessful.

Just out of curiosity, do any of our scat posters know what the payout is for their Wyoming game?

Aside, from the "history" against a matchup, I'm not sure Boise can afford to pay enough to get UM's interest. They do pretty well on home attendance (although not a regular sellout) and TV money, but apparently not enough to go overboard on payouts. That's with a pretty sweet deal on TV money, granted to keep them in the MWC. But even with that, they're not exactly rolling in dough over there.

Their typical (over the past few years) guarantees for FCS opponents have been something like $400,000 - $425,000 ... sometimes less, but I did not find anything higher. UM probably figures it's not worth the hit versus a home game at WaGriz.

We're getting $425,00 to play Wyoming. But then paying San Diego and Drake $275,000 I believe but could be wrong on those.

I'm in no way in the know for this. But, I suspect two factors play a role in this. 1) Montana makes more money playing a DII/lower tier FCS program at home than many lower tier FBS programs can offer us. 2) Lower tier FBS programs won;t risk the loss to Montana. :thumb:

The history is in play, as Haslam has told me that BSU would not even engage in a discussion with UM. Must be still stinging over that '95 54-28 beatdown we handed them in their last year in FCS. I guess we were just supposed to lie down for them. I also recall a lot of animus over the DD cheap shot injury in '94 at Boise that took him (and us) out of the NC conversation. We may have been better in '94 than we were in '95.

In my opinion, Griz going to Washington is = to Central Washington going to WaGriz. It might even help recruiting; telling recruits they have a chance to shine on even a larger stage/atmosphere like Washington or Oregon. For some other than the Griz players, it might be the highlight of their football career, to play at WaGriz with the rabid fanbase.? It would be cool, to play in places San Diego State, and Colorado State for added experience. I still in favor for playing a team like NDSU or JMU every year to stoke the fires early?
