Fascinating Idea

Personally, I don't even think its that fascinating, I think its just a great idea that makes sense, especially the way the SDSU coach wants to do it, which is only on the opponents side of the field. The Alabama high school coach that does this, does it everywhere on the field, and only kicks onside kicks, which I don't think would work at this level. There is such a competitive imbalance in High School ball, that you can basically do whatever you want if you have the talent. As far as never punting once over the 50, I personally think its a fantastic idea. Punting is basically an archaic throwback to footballs rugby roots anyway. The other archaic part of rugby thats still allowed is the drop kick, which you never see at all. I think Doug Flutie did the last drop kick, and basically he is the last one to try it at any level (besides Drew Brees in the Pro Bowl...but that doesn't count. The fair catch kick though, I would love to see that.

Also, sorry for derailing this thread momentarily. The drop kick, and fair catch kick, are two of the most radical rules in football (that are never used) and the idea of a non punting, non field goal kicking team, as well as only onside kicks got me going.

The#1 problem with this is that when it doesn't work, the coach will be blamed. No coach gets fired for punting on 4thand 7at the 35.

You had better be secure with your job if you want to be a trendsetter.

I would guess that the offense would love this scheme.

At your own 35, or the opponents? Because, I think at least in this case, he is only talking about not punting once he is on the opponents side of the field. I think that makes perfect sense. The FG is obviously a good choice if its a 1-3 point game, with little time left, but honestly, I don't really see much advantage of punting if you are on the opponents side of the field. Maybe you can pin them down at their own 1, but when you get the ball back you will have worse field position than you did had you just went for it originally.

Do we have the new rule for onside kicks as well? I know the NFL adopted a rule that the ball must bounce twice before the kicking team can grab it.
