Fall Camp

I’m going to make a bold statement......and it’s from witnessing him first hand......Cole Grossman is going to be a known name across the Big Sky. He’s about to introduce himself to everyone. Gonna be way fun watching him for years as he’s technically a Freshman!

Day 2 observations (from Gogola article)

Linebacker Marcus Welnel made some highlight plays during 11-vs.-11 competition. The junior from Helena broke up a pass and then forced Akron transfer Isiah Childs to fumble near the sideline a few plays later.

Childs, a freshman running back, responded later in that period with a touchdown run of at least 50 yards. He bounced left, weaved through traffic and raced down the left sideline.

Tight end Cole Grossman looked good for the second day in a row. One play that drew oohs and ahhs was a one-handed catch in stride as he reached the end zone. Grossman, who practiced with the first-team offense again, is still technically a freshman in terms of eligibility, having grayshirted in 2018, redshirted in 2019 and getting the NCAA's extra year because of COVID.

In the final set of 11-vs.-11 work, Humphrey was 1-of-4 passing, hitting Mitch Roberts on a corner route. The drive ended with Carver Gilman missing a field goal wide left from the left hash. Brown completed one pass before getting picked off by freshman safety Jaxon Lee, who jumped the route and returned the ball about 60 yards for a score that ended practice.

Is Marcus Welnel faster than most? Maybe I just happened to catch him at the right times, but a few times last year I remember thinking he looked demonstrably faster than most.

I have no clue, but what better place to ask?

Day 3 observations

Montana continued to get its tight ends involved in the passing game. Freshmen Cole Grossman and Erik Barker both caught multiple passes with the first-team offense in 11-vs-11 play.

“It’s one of our younger groups, but they’ve got ability,” Hauck said. “I think from Cole, as you mentioned, through that group, we’ve got more ability athletically than we’ve had by a large margin. So, we’re hoping that shows up, and then the physical maturity has got to come.”

Grossman, who stands at 6-4, 220, still has four years of eligibility left after redshirting in 2018, grayshirting in 2019 and getting the free COVID year last season. He’s been a regular target each of the three days of camp.

“We’ve been in no pads for two days, but Cole’s done a good job,” Hauck said before Wednesday’s practice, the first day in full pads. “He’s a hard worker. He’s a good athlete, and he’s done some good things. Today’s his day. We got pads on.”

Redshirt freshman quarterback Kris Brown appeared to get fewer reps than the past two days in 11-vs-11 play. He did get to play with and against the first teamers in the red zone during the final 11-vs-11 period, completing two short throws, handing off the ball once and overthrowing a wide receiver in the end zone on a corner route.

Senior Cam Humphrey seemed to improve his accuracy from previous days. Perhaps his highlight throw was a deep pass to Sammy Akem, guarded tight by Hicks Onu, on a fly route for about a 60-yard touchdown. He also connected on a corner route to Gabe Sulser in between two defenders for a gain of at least 30 yards.

Hicks Onu and sophomore cornerback Corbin Walker have continued to provide some tight coverage on the first-team wide receivers.

Senior defensive end Joe Babros seemed to create some occasional pressure off the right side, including one rush that led to a poor throw that was nearly picked off by linebacker Marcus Welnel.

True freshman Camden Capser made all three of his field goals from about 30-40 yards out. Carver Gilman made one, missed one and had one blocked as Alex Gubner appeared to get a hand on the ball.

Sophomore Tyler Ganoung got first-team reps at left guard, where Kordell Pillans had been the past two days. Pillans was on the second team.

I believe Camden Capser is going to be the next great Griz kicker!

I hope so. God knows we have been without a great kicker for many years...

Even a broke clock is right twice a day….

Nice deflection, Mr. Obvious.

I'll make you this bet: Barring injury, I'm betting Cam starts over Brown. If Brown is named starter at any point in the season for PERFORMANCE reasons, I'll donate $100 to your charity of choice. Otherwise, you donate $100 to MY charity of choice.

Reasons it's a draw:

Injury
Academics
Rest for Playoffs

I don't bet with people I don't. I won a bet with an anonymous poster once, and he would never pay up. I don't need to bet to prove my manhood. Get your kicks elsewhere.

Well, you’re not wrong I guess.

You've obviously never played the game.

Look at me using the quote function!

I did, but only electric football. I played quarterback and admittedly I was rather turnover prone. Just had a difficult time holding onto the felt ball.

Fear of being wrong noted.

That's too bad. I was just beating Steve to the punch. You respond to anything he writes, regardless of the topic, and his response is always, "you don't know anything about football".

I'm kind of jealous. If Hauck ever starts to struggle you have the smartest football mind right in your very backyard. Really not fair if I'm being honest. :(

Yes, thank god. It’s how we’ll maintain our superiority over the ‘scats.
