fabulous frosh redux?

maybe you remember or maybe you don't--montana's "fabulous frosh" class of 1953-54. ray howard from helena, zip rhoades from kalispell, al dunham from shelby. all joined the next year by russ sherrif from helena. the promise was cut short by a knee injury to howard, the kind that today would be fixed in a few months, but back then was pretty much career-ending.

my grandfather told me all about it.

anyway, after my last post, i found that we have a potentially similar class emerging in montana, kids now juniors, the class of 2015. that would be jared samuleson of billings west, whose dad played for the griz; tres tinkle of hellgate; and jessie sims of stevensville, whose sister is a freshman for the lady griz. tinkle and samuleson are already rated three-star recuits by scout.com, while sims will likely wind up playing football.

so after what seems like a long drought, montana basketball talent may be on the rebound.

I believe there are bigger schools in on Samuelson also. Saw that Tres got an offer from Boston College the other day.

I'm not giving up on Tinkle and Samuelson being Griz until the ink is dry...

good for you, buttegrizzle! that's two of us. i can see one good kid wanting to leave the state, but if the state had, say, several three or four star players in one class (and tinkle might be a five before he's through), i could see those kids wanting to get together to represent their own state, just as they do at the aau level. imagine montana going to the ncaa tournament with several blue-chip kids from montana. how great would that be!

too, tinkle and samuelson are front-court players. we've already recruited a stellar backcourt to go with them. (oh, and we've got the coach.)

Just hypothesizing,

Pulling those two into the Montana fold would be a recruiting coup of monumental proportions. They however are going to have a lot of competitors for their services. Tres at least in Montana, is a once in a decade type kid or even once in a generation type of talent. Every one that I have chatted about this, said that he as a sophomore is as polished as any Montana hs kid in many, many years.

Neither kid is a lock for the NBA, but it isn't hard to get excited about the possibility of the potential of that. Hard though, to imagine, that it plays out this way... But to have a Missoula kid, who has the potential to be that good, playing at the UofM is decidedly exciting.

But as it has been with the Tinkle's, they actively push their kids to take the best opportunity for them. If Tres is getting offers from BC now and continues to improve, the likelihood of similar competitive offers is going to make it difficult not to take his talents to places like BC or better.

I got to watch Tres playing with current and ex Griz during Griz Cage camp this past summer. I guess he was between Jr and Sr year right? Anyway, he more than held his own that's for sure. I was very impressed that he could be just as effective outside the arc as under the basket. He has very long range and big hops!

actually, tres was between his sophomore and junior year. the other thing is, he's probably got a growth spurt left in him. just look at his, ah, dad.

If you can believe her -- and knowing her a little I certainly do -- Jos didn't rule out Montana until the very last moment, and that's because she had an opportunity to get a free education at Stanford. BC no-doubt has better academics than Montana, but it's no Stanford.

While I doubt that Tres stays at UM, I won't rule it out either. And man, if that means we can lock Tinks down for another 5 or 6 years..... Well, a man can dream! :thumb:

It would be great to add Tres and the Samuelson kid as GRIZ. I don't know the Samuelson kid. I know Tres a little. I do how deep the family bleeds Montana though. I also know how committed they are to family. Wayne is also damn committed to taking the program to higher levels. I wonder if Tres would be willing to get on board with that.

For the record, I hope both players will be GRIZ and be part of the players that will bring the program to higher levels. Anyone can win and be on a nationally ranked team at the likes of Kansas, Kentucky, North Carolina, Florida, etc. Is that really that much of a challenge for recruits? It is not. I hope Wayne can find some recruits wanting to play together and want the challenge of bringing a program into national prominence.

If I were the coaching staff, that is pitch I use for the higher rated recruits. It would be a pitch unique and very few contending schools could use. It would be helpful if these recruits also loved outdoor recreation.

Here is to hoping these boys will be GRIZ!!!!!

Stanford men upset UCONN at Storres last night and the kid from Great Falls played a pivotal roll......also clanged a couple of free throws that would have made the win a lot easier.

Josh Huestis. Yep saw him play in the Montana-Wyoming All-star game after his senior year, when my niece played on the women's squad with Sullivan and Selvig. I could not believe I hadn't heard much about him before that. 6' 7" long arms, huge vertical. I guess he grew a lot going into his senior year. Needless to say UM and MSU missed out big, but its hard to compete with a full ride from Stanford. If we could just get over the hump - get a class with the best MT kids like Tres and Samuelson, with our backcourt - make, say a two game dent in the NCAA... like EG said... a man can dream...
